Business Workouts

What makes gyms like OrangeTheory Fitness, CrossFit and SoulCycle such a success? And how does that matter to you in your business?

The current success that is being seen in the fitness world is in the way these businesses have changed how people workout — and how they feel about it. Success leaves clues, so let’s have a look at them and how they can help you outside of the gym.

  1. Control the calendar

The first thing these programs do is set a schedule They tell you when the classes are offered and you jump through hoops to show up because they have something that you value.

Are you controlling your calendar or are you jumping through hoops to meet with clients when they want? Then you miss out on important family events, meals, and the always important lead creation time? Remember, as the professional, you have something the client will value so keep control of your own calendar. Do doctors, dentists, lawyers and other professionals jump as soon as someone calls? Why do you?

  1. Work in groups

The next factor in the a success of these fitness programs is group classes. These give you the opportunity to have others watch what you do and learn from them in return. This lets you copy a gym-mate if you didn’t understand the coach. This lets you compete with someone and up your game. This lets you share challenges and wins together.

Many people head into work and then lock themselves in their private office without any group accountability. Sit in the open. Bring others to sit with you. This will then allow you to listen to each other, compete with each other and share challenges and wins with each other. Even better, bring a group of people and the energy that comes with everyone “working out” together!

  1. Be accountable

One of the most powerful tools to lead someone towards success is accountability, and that is something that these programs offer. When you workout alone, do you run as fast as you can while on the treadmill or do you just jog? Do you lift weights to push yourself or just impress yourself? Having others doing the same thing you are shows you that baseline to strive for or to break through.

Having a group to generate new business with not only teaches you better how to do it, it makes sure that succeed and don’t settle!

  1. Mix it up

There are challenges and changes each and every day you attend one of these workouts. Nobody wants to do the same exact thing day after day after day after day. We look for distractions, changes and excitement around us all the time. These successful gyms bring that to you with a different workout each day (even if elements are the same) and opportunities to show yourself how far you have progressed.

Most people don’t do what they know they should do because they are looking for distraction and change. Prepare for it instead, and move your lead generation location. Move your lead generation time. Move your lead generation target and call your sphere of influence today, your family tomorrow and past clients on the third day. The elements stay the same with changes to keep the challenge fun.

Maybe you aren’t ready to franchise yourself like these highly successful gyms, yet you can get more than just a good workout from them. If you pay attention, you can learn lessons of success and end up a lot less sweaty!

3 Life Lessons in 1 minute

The great news is this posting has 3 powerful life lessons found within it. The not as great news is that it will take longer than 1 minute to read. The 1 minute in the title refers to the amount of time it took to experience and learn these lessons.

OTFThere I was working out at Orangetheory Fitness for a 5am session and feeling pretty good. It was an endurance day and our trainer for the morning, Jay, had me on the treadmill to start.

Jay would push all of us on the treadmills to a 3 minute block at a pace that was uncomfortable and then reward us with a break at a pace that was more comfortable. He continued this cycle with the reward times getting shorter and shorter.

After 15 minutes it was time to finish this block of running and Jay asked for us to give him 1 minute at our best possible speed and finish strong.

For those of you that know me outside of just reading my postings you know that I am determined and competitive. That being said I cranked the treadmill to the best speed I have ever run at and began my 1 minute ALL OUT!

30 seconds into my sprint I realized that I bit off more than I could chew, as my dad would have told me, and I had to jump off the racing belt of the treadmill as I was unable to continue.

It was at that moment that our trainer Jay leapt onto the back of my treadmill and began to encourage (yell) at me. He told me to get back on that treadmill and not to stop for anything. He told me to stop looking at the clock and just run until he told me I could stop. He told me there was nothing I couldn’t achieve if I put my head down and just ran!

And then finally Jay let all of us that were on the treadmills slow down and walk it out.

In that  minute, to be fair it was in the minutes after when I could reevaluate what had just happened, that I found these 3 powerful life lessons that will change me forever. I hope they help you without the need to go for a run.

1)We all need help to grow

Many of us believe we can do anything on our own. We don’t need help from others. Many of us are right, to a limit. Some of us have strong natural abilities in certain areas of life. Some of us are very entrepreneurial. When we become purposeful and we have someone to push us, someone hold us accountable or someone to care enough about us to tell us what we don’t always want to hear we can achieve breakthroughs and accomplish greater heights than we ever believed. In The ONE Thing this is referred to as Going from E to P. Remember, no one succeeds alone.

E to P

2)You must earn the right to be passionate for someone else’s goals

Jay had built a foundation with me based upon his credibility as a trainer, his authentic nature and his willingness to share. Jay has become a mentor to me in the area of personal health. Because of this he had the right to leap up on that treadmill and demand more from me.

Had Jay jumped up on the treadmill with someone who was in the class for the first time, they probably would have never returned.

Before you can help drive people towards their goals you must earn the right!

3)You can do anything for 30 seconds

If you have seen the movie We Bought a Zoo you heard Matt Damon playing Benjamin Mee tell his son that “sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.”

I believe that courage isn’t what is needed. Embarrassing bravery isn’t what is needed. All that is really needed is commitment. Commit to something for 30 seconds can attain it. Some things you might need to commit to for longer. For now, start with just 30 seconds!

Jay, thank you for the push, the all out, and the life lessons!

Choose your own adventure

Have you ever wanted to be an author? You are one already! You are writing your own Choose Your Own Adventure story each and every day of your life.

Do you remember reading the Choose Your Own Adventure books? You might have been lost at sea or searching for treasure or maybe you even discovered aliens! As you read into the book you were given choices to make and that sent you to different pages in the book. The best part about the Choose Your Own Adventure books was that you could reread them and make different choices all from the comfort of your own chair.

Life is the same as a Choose Your Own Adventure book except that we can’t peak at the other page to see what our choice has led us to. Sometimes we do get the chance to repeat a choice as George Santayana said “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Although that usually means we made the wrong choice the first time.

One choice will have a domino effect on other choices just like in the Choose Your Own Adventure books. If you have made the choice to get in better shape that will have an impact on your choices about what to eat and your exercise plan.

In the Choose Your Own Adventure books you were always rewarded for making the morally or ethically correct choice and you were often rewarded for hard-working choices. Are you following those rules in your life as well?

Do you choose to make one more sales call or call it a day?
Do you choose to grade one more paper from your students or turn on the tv?
Do you choose to  get up and work out or stay in bed for an extra half an hour?

You might not like all the choices you have before you. You might be fearful of the outcome from one of the choices as it could mean an end to a relationship or looking for a new job. You might feel that you are backed into a corner and have no choice. You can always find a way out as long as you are willing to deal with the choice you make.

Workaholics remember that you are also making a choice as you stay at work longer or bring work home with you. You are choosing work over relationships and interaction.

Some choices need to be made now to allow for other choices to be available to us later, such as working harder now to afford that vacation later. Just remember each choice has a consequence to it.

We wish that life could be as simple as a Choose Your Own Adventure book and we could put it down or just flip back a few pages when we make the wrong choice. Instead, be ready for the choice you make might be the one that leads you to something beautiful!

This morning I had to make the choice of a little more sleep or getting up for an early morning bike ride. I chose the bike ride and was rewarded with beauty.

Chadalyst – Make a list of all of the choices you have made over the past week (remember everything is a choice) and find a pattern. Are you making the best choices for you?

Refuel your life for free. Step 3

In yesterday’s posting we looked at the second step in refueling your life. Make sure you check back to step 1 and step 2 as we continue to cover how you feel when you are running on empty and how you feel when your personal tank is filled.

We have talked about the first two things that you can do to make sure that you start refueling you own life, for free.

  1. Garbage in = garbage out – make sure you eat right!
  2. Sleep enough for your body to recharge

Let’s move on to step 3…

Studies have shown again and again, and there are too many sources to quote on this one, that 20 minutes a day of exercise can help you sleep better. This works very well with step number 2.

Working out can also improve your metabolism, which works really well with step number 1.

Working out will also improve your brain functions. This doesn’t go with any specific step and is still probably the most important benefit.

Find 20 minutes a day for a high powered walk, a ride on your exercise bike or some time with weights if that is your thing.

Working out is a commitment you will need to make with yourself. Figure out if you are someone that should start your day this way or if you prefer to end your day with a workout. Maybe like some, you should look into getting in a workout in the middle of the day to help keep you going. Just pick a time of the day and stick to it!

Not sure what to do and you don’t want to spend the money to join a gym, just go for a walk with a friend or your dog. How about you run a flight of stairs a few times. If those don’t work, do some push-ups during the commercials of the show you are watching. Any of these will help get you started on the right path.

Now that you have the first 3 steps, and probably ones you could have guessed, join us in our next blog for one that might throw you for a loop. Register to follow along with this blog to get the next step in refueling your life emailed right to you.

Chadalyst – Add a workout to your day. It might be a 20 minute walk, or a bike ride or skipping rope. Just find something you want to do, and that you will do, and add it to your daily routine right away.
