Unlink your Social Media Accounts Today!

Again and again we hear about this wonderful way to be more efficient in the world of social media. Sadly, SOCIAL media isn’t about being efficient it is about relationships and they take time!

One of the tips and tricks shared with you from many self-proclaimed Gurus, Masters, Rockstars, and Ninjas is to save yourself time and be more efficient by using linking your social media profiles to share updates.

  • Ich verstehe nicht
  • No entiendo
  • ik niet begrijp
  • Je ne comprends pas
  • 我不明白 (Wǒ bù míngbái)

They all mean the same thing…I don’t understand.

I don’t understand why these “experts” think that this is a wise choice at all.

Would you go to China and speak Spanish thinking anyone would understand you? Would you go to Germany and speak French? You either learn the language of where you are going or you understand that there will probably be some communication challenges.

Then why would you go to Twitter and speak Facebook? Or go to Facebook and speak Instagram?

Each social media platform has its own language and must be respected if you want to develop relationships and not just sound like a fool.

  • Twitter is limited to 140 characters
  • Instagram is focused on photos and hashtags
  • LinkedIn is business talk and job searching
  • Facebook is conversational and sharing and bragging and over-sharing

These sites and all of the other social media sites out there, use different languages so UNLINK your social media profiles from each other and speak the correct language for each of them.

Here are some examples of what we are speaking about…

Here is a posting that was made on Facebook and because the accounts are linked you can see how it also posted on Twitter. Notice the hashtags on Facebook that didn’t make it to Twitter? Twitter is the profile to use hashtags on and because these were linked they were lost and the user probably doesn’t even know it!

Here is someone using Instagram and sharing it on Facebook. We have all heard that images work great on Facebook and still, the hashtags are meant for Instagram and should stay there.Instagram to Facebook

Take the time to speak to people in the correct language and stop attempting to save the 30 seconds it takes to make an additional posting. You will be rewarded with true conversation, better relationships and more success on the social media platforms that you have decided to use.

Everything I Know About Social Media I Learned From Sesame Street

A common question asked is where did you learn everything you know about social media?

The answer to that is surprising to many. Everything I know about social media was learned from spending time with great friends like Ernie, Oscar, Bert, Elmo and others. That’s right…all we need to know was taught to us from our friends that live on Sesame Street.

When Sesame Street was being created their goal was to build a children’s television show that would “master the addictive qualities of television and do something good with them.” How about helping us master the now addictive qualities of social media? By following the same lessons as the show, you will be able to do something good with everyone’s social media addictions.

With a show that is broadcast in over 140 countries and has won over 140 Emmy Awards you have to figure they have done something right. A survey shows that 95% of all American preschoolers had watched Sesame Street by the time they were three years old. Now that is a large following!

If they can have a following and growth like that, so can you if you follow their lessons.

What are those lessons?big bird

  1. Give Value (then ask for money)
    That’s right you have to give to get. You don’t see commercials when watching Sesame Street like you do on every other television program. You get value, you get lessons, you get fun and then when it is time, you are asked to donate to keep the show running.
    Do the same thing in your social media world. Give value, offer some lessons and share the fun. Then when you have the relationship built and the time is right you will be allowed to market and ask for money (or sales of your product, or whatever)
  2. Play Nice With Others
    People and monsters all work together in the world of Sesame Street. Any disagreement is quickly resolved and forgiven and usually came from a simple misunderstanding.
    Work with others in the social world. Don’t bash, don’t argue, and if you disagree that is ok, just don’t hold grudges and move on for future growth.
    Remember if there is someone you just can’t play nice with, you can unfriend them, block them or stop engaging with their business page.
  3. Use Humor
    One of the things that made Sesame Street fun and easy to follow is that the laughs continue throughout the program. Have you ever watched a child sit and stare and laugh at the silly monsters, funny things that happen and of course the bright colors.
    Make sure your social media voice is one that has humor in it. We are not looking for knock knock jokes or anything like that. Just make sure to share funny things (other than cat photos) that you see, that you hear and that happen to you. We all walk into a wall while texting, get in the wrong car in the parking lot or fall up an escalator. Let others laugh with you and they will engage much more.
  4. Share
    If there is any lesson that I still remember from Sesame Street from years ago it is to share. Share with your friends, share with people you just meet and everything is better. Amazingly there is always more when we share instead of keeping it all to ourselves.
    Share other people’s information. Did someone share a posting that you found interesting? Share it. Did you read someone’s blog or an article that was worth sharing (like this one hopefully) then share it! By sharing information you will increase a relationship with more people, create more opportunities in your life and get more people sharing with you.
  5. We All Have Short Attention Spans
    Bright colored monsters moving quickly around the screen. Fun songs to sing and dance to. Interaction and engagement by having the viewing children talk to the people and answer the simple questions. All of these techniques kept children focused and sitting at the tv for long period of times. Some people found this a bad influence and some, mostly parents, found this a wonderful blessing of a few moments to get other tasks done.
    The short attention span is even more of a challenge now with the internet always blinking, changing and offering us instant gratification. How do we combat that? By using information that is a valuable lesson, that is fun and that makes us want to engage and interact. Keep that in mind as you create your tweets, postings and updates. Know that we aren’t staying long unless the content is good.Speaking of short attention span…are you still here? Hopefully the images and the strong content kept you engaged!

Everything I know about social media I learned from Sesame Street and if you think about it, so did you. Sesame Street has been running and a success for over 43 years and with these lessons your social media success should have a long shelf life as well.

Hashtags: Do and Don’t

What is this elusive hashtag that so many are hoping to capture, tame and train to bring success?

According to en.wiktionary.org, a hashtag is defined as a tag embedded in a message posted on the Twitter microblogging service, consisting of a word within the message prefixed with a hash sign.

A hashtag is easily recognized by its odd shape. It has been known as a tic-tac-toe board, a pound sign, the number symbol and other fun terms.

The purpose of a hashtag is to group messages together on social media. In other words, branding. By creating a hashtag (just put # in front of your word – it does not have to be a real word) you turn the term to a searchable term and an instant link to other messages containing the same term. Before we get into the DO’s and DON’Ts of hashtags let’s be clear on this one thing. Hashtags are a language of social media. Keep hashtags to the social media sites that embrace them such as Twitter, Instagram and Google Plus and keep the hashtags off the social media sites they don’t belong on such as Facebook!

DO

  • Create a hashtag to keep conversations together on a set topic. This will be creating branding for you. Create your hashtag well for your business and your conversation topic.
  • Use hashtags often to keep them top of mind. If you create a hashtag and use it once or twice people will never catch on.
  • Promote your hashtag on marketing materials so people can find your conversations. People don’t randomly search for hashtags. This means you will need to get your hashtags out there in front of people
  • Follow some other hashtags to follow conversations on topics of interest. You do not need to reply or respond as you can be a lurker and just listen and learn – a great way to develop a hashtag is to watch how others are using them.

DON’T

  • Use them with the wrong platforms. Hashtags have a home, and Facebook is not one of those places. Keep the hashtags off Facebook and speak the right language.
  • Attempt to stuff too many hashtags into a social posting. Keep the total number of hashtags to three or less – if your postings are stuffed with hashtags there is no information of value and people will quickly stop listening to you.
  • Give up on a hashtag just because others aren’t using it in the first 24 hours. It will take time for you to develop a hashtag that is worth following – as mentioned in the DO section it will take time and marketing before people are using your hashtag as well. Have patience and it will come together.
  • Keep changing your hashtag. This is a way you brand a topic and conversation and if you use a different hashtag each time you have an event people will never know where to find you – We see too often that people have an event and use a hashtag and the same company will have another event the next month and change hashtags. This is usually done to standout with their hashtag and it works for the shelf life of the day before fading away and not followed up with. If the company had used a consistent hashtag they would have improved their branding and continued conversations

When we say Wednesday what do you think of? Hump day most likely.
When we say Friday what do you think of? TGIF and the start of the weekend probably.
When we then mention Sunday what do you think of? Football day possibly? Day at church? End of the weekend?

Whatever the answer to this you think the same thing each time. Sunday, Wednesday and Friday (as well as the other 4 days) have branded themselves with specific triggers for you. Imagine if each week the names were changed? Doesn’t make sense does it? Neither does changing your hashtags!

6 Warning Signs That You Are Using Social Media Wrong

We have heard from many “gurus” “experts” and even “ninjas” about making sure we develop relationships on social media. Do any of them really help us figure out how to use Social Media correctly or do they just come up with cool sounding titles for themselves?

Where else can you post to 1 billion users? How many other places are there that you can tweet to millions of people? Are there other places to connect with that many other professionals without even getting out of bed?

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and so many other platforms have come onto the scene and every company is looking to social media to solve all of their challenges.

Here is a list of 6 warning signs that you are using social media wrong AND tips to help you with each of them so you can move in the right direction.

1) Your profile is not up to date
The first thing that people learn about you is what you have in your profile. If you are not up to date, then you are doing it wrong! Check to be sure you have the important jobs showing up and not all of the odd jobs you have had.
What about your contact info? If you are hoping to have people reach out and contact you make sure you are openly sharing your correct contact information. Get over the issue of someone might spam you!

Now let’s take a look at some of the things that you are posting, tweeting, and sharing on the different social media platforms and the warning signs that you are using social media wrong…

2)It is all about you
Take a look at your recent postings. Are they all about the wonderful things you are doing? Then you are doing it wrong. Make sure you are helping others solve problems. Make sure you are you sharing with others something you learned, read or saw. Make sure you remember that success on social media comes from listening, not talking

3)You post and run
When you do post something of value and people comment or retweet your posting do you return to engage with them? If you aren’t then you are doing it wrong. Take a moment to say thank you, to answer the follow-up question, to stay part of the conversation.
4)You are in it for the Klout perks
The point of a posting or a tweet is to share and engage, not get 500 people to like something so your Klout score can climb. If that is why you are posting, then you are doing it wrong! It is better to have 5 people comment and engage with you fully then 500 people comment and not really care. Care about Klout, then get Klout Klarity
5)You tag everyone for no reason
Are you are the person posting a photo, making a comment or writing a tweet and tagging or mentioning everyone possible for no reason other than you hope they will engage with you? You are doing it wrong! Tag people in photos with you. Tag someone who you are talking about. Mention someone who you are engaging with. Do not just tag hoping people pay attention to you.
6)You are extremely negative
Everyone has a bad day. If you are having a bad life and sharing it all the time, you are doing it wrong! Be transparent on social media and don’t post about some perfect life you aren’t really living. Don’t be the person that never has anything positive to say and wants to complain and bring everyone else down.

Klout Klarity

It is time to get some Klout Klarity. In a search to find out if we are as important as we think we are we turn to sites such as Klout. When we don’t get the answer that we want (we aren’t as important as we hope to be) we then find the site’s weaknesses and bash Klout as a scoring system.

In this posting we are going to look at the ways that Klout works.

We understand there are ways to “game” the system and we will not cover those here. Every system has a flaw and someone will always find the way to work the system. If you just use Klout for what it is, you will find it useful and the future applications are powerful.

-Forget Your Score and Track Your Progress Instead
It doesn’t matter if your score is 20, 30, 40 or higher. Use Klout to monitor your score and watch for it to climb or drop. If your score is climbing you improving in the area of engagement. If your score is dropping you are lacking in social engagement. Track this on a regular basis and continue with your success or halt your drop.
Side note – according to Klout the average score is actually 20 and as it climbs it becomes exponentially harder to continue climbing

-Learn How to Understand the Klout Charts
Learn how to understand the charts on Klout. Track your True Reach, Amplification and Network to watch and see how many people are responding to the things you are posting. Is your network growing or shrinking? Are they acting on the things you are saying? Check out your Klout style to see if you are content creator or someone who syndicates important information or something in between

-Explore People
Want to know what someone is talking about socially most of the time? Check out their Klout page and see the topics that they are influential in. Some people will have no topics and some will have many. These are the things that you can expect them to focus their social voice on.

-Explore Topics
Are you wondering about a specific topic like your home town or a company like Apple or a topic like Realtors? Just enter the category into Klout’s search bar and find out whom Klout believes is the most influential and even more importantly find out who the users believes are the most influential as top +K recipients (more on +K later)

-Let People Know You Are Listening
There is nothing that will keep someone generating great content more than others thanking them for what they are sharing and letting them know that you are listening. Visit their Klout page and give them +K in the topic they are influencing you about. This is your way of saying “thank you for sharing on the topic of _____”

These last two things are great bonuses to Klout on top of everything else.

-Earn Free Things
Check in and check the Perks! You never know what could be coming your way. Maybe a gift card from American Express or an iTunes gift card or a tv series on DVD or any other number of perks depending on you. Free things never hurt and all the companies want is you as an influential person to speak about them. (NOTE – for the record I have received each of these perks at one time or another so I know they happen)

-Earn Badges
There are many people out there that love their badges. From the Boy Scouts to the Foursquare users and Klout is no exception with their achievements. Check out what others have earned badges for and earn your own for giving +K, viewing profiles, reaching score plateaus and so much more. These badges are just a visual representation of what a user has achieved.
