Who are your 5 people?

Author, motivational speaker and entrepreneur Jim Rohn is known for many great sayings such as:

Never wish life were easier, wish that you were better.

You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight.

Affirmation without discipline is the beginning of delusion.

And then there was this one:

You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.

Now for the big question, who are those people?

My dad was either a big fan of Jim Rohn or he understood this lesson at a high level from somewhere in life. Because when I was in grade 10 I spent my time with a specific group of friends. My grades suffered and I almost had the opportunity to repeat some of my classes that year. My dad stepped up and gave me two options. Option one, be grounded for the rest of my high school life and never have a social life. Option two, find new friends!

The friends that I spent time with during grade 10 I am sure are all great people now. At the time they didn’t show the drive that my dad knew was within me and instead of pushing myself, I held back to stay with my friends. Had I remained with this group, who knows who I am today!

Instead of being locked in the house for the next few years, as you can guess I took the second option and I developed other friendships and surrounded myself with a group of guys that had drive, determination and goals in their future. Now one is an author, one an actor, one a lawyer, one a leader in his organization and one a leader in tourism for a major city. All of these friends are like brothers to me and even now, 30 years later we are still just as close.

What did my dad know? He knew that surrounding me with others that were growing, learning and challenging each other would help me to grow, to learn and to take on challenges. At the time I am sure I argued and kicked and screamed about the change. Now all I can say is thank you dad!

Let’s get back to the question that I asked you before sharing part of my story. Who are those 5 people for you?
Write the names of the 5 people (adult children count, otherwise don’t count your young kids still at home) that you spend the most time with.
Then create a column and rate them on a 1-10 scale of, 1) how fun they are 2) their business success 3) their health.
Average up the score for each category, fun, success and health and I bet you find rating of you.

We become the people we spend time with.

Choose your friends wisely!

Let me introduce you to you

After spending a week at Keller Williams Family Reunion this past week there were many AHA’s that were being shared. One of them kept being repeated and stood out to me was that you are only 5 years from being whomever you want to be. What great news!

Let me share with you what that can look like as we go back in time together and I share my story. Let’s go back 6 years. I know I said 5 years, let’s look at the 5 year gap from 2011-2016 to see what can be done.

I share with you my story as an example and then at the end I will share with you the simple steps you can follow to create your own transformation.

In 2011 I am not married and in 2016 I have a strong marriage with my amazing wife Nita that is built on trust and honesty. By using strategies of Darren Hardy, I have created a gratitude journal for my wife and shared it with her. It now always has me looking for the things that I am grateful for about her and it has her doing the same. This keeps us growing and strengthening our marriage.

In 2011 I am up to my eyeballs in debt due to irresponsible management of my money and credit and in 2016 I am proud to say I am debt free, except for my home. How does this happen? Following the path put before us by Dave Ramsey for Financial Peace in our lives.

In 2011 I think that I am in shape and in 2016 I am in the best shape of my life. By finding a gym that works for me and a trainer that pushes me and a nutritionist that guides me healthy becomes a way of life.

In 2011 I call Bellingham Washington home and by 2016 I call Atlanta Georgia home.  With growth comes opportunity and with opportunity comes change.

Now that we are back in the present it is time for you to set your vision for who you will be in 2022. It might sound far away, although it is only 5 years away and will be here before you know it!

How to do it? First thing is the hardest thing as you want to do is decide who you want to be when you get there. If you don’t have a vision you will look up and be the same you 5 years from now, or you might have gone backwards. Sit down and dream big! Do you want your health to look a certain way? How about where you are living? What does business look like for you? Who are you in relationships with?

Second step is what is called Goal Setting to the Now from The ONE Thing and take your written vision of 5 years from now backwards. If you know who you want to be in 5 years, who do you need to be in 3 years to be on track? Who you then need to be in 1 year to be on track? Who will you need to be in 6 months then? How about 1 month? How about at the end of this week? How about as soon as you finish reading this?

Walk the goal backwards and it becomes easier to see the finish line.

Now it is up to you to get started and I can’t wait to meet the 2022 version of you!

PS Did you notice along the way of my path, there was a mentor, a trainer, a coach to show me the path? Find yours today!

Compete or Complete?

It is amazing how powerful a single letter of our alphabet can be. The letter E changes the sound of so many other letters. The letter S can turn one into many. And the letter L can make a huge difference in your results.

loser

Let’s look closer at this. Years ago many people used to make the sign of the letter L on their head to make fun of others and represent the term loser.

Today it is that same letter L that could be the thing that is keeping you in a cycle of losing and preventing you from becoming the winner that you know you are!

Most people go through the day just to complete everything that they need to do. Check, check and check. People love to check their to-do lists and feel as though they got enough done to call it a day. There are people who even put ‘create to-do list’ on their to-do list, just to complete one task immediately.

Then there are the people out there that compete to bring out the best in themselves. Competition is a powerful tool and does not have to lead to someone being a sore winner. These people might compete with others just as quickly as they might compete with a target that is set. Best of all they might just compete with themselves and grow each and every opportunity they get.

Which one are you? Someone that looks to compete or someone with that letter L that is happy when they just complete a task?

Don’t let a single letter define you.

Lessons of the Season

It’s my favorite time of the year! There are so many lessons to be harvested during the month of October. Here are 3 of my favorite lessons, 2 from the world of sports and one from your own kids.

1)Baseball playoffs are happening! The teams that are still battling it out remind us that you have to FINISH STRONG and no matter what challenge is in front of you, find a solution. It doesn’t matter if it is the middle of the game, bring in your best pitcher if it gives you the best chance to win! It is win or go home time!
What can you do to FINISH STRONG as the activities you do today lead to results at the end of the year? What challenge is in front of you and how can you solve that challenge? What must you do that you have never done before?

2)Football is one-third of the way into their season and some teams got off to a slow start and haven’t let that slow them. Some got off to a fast start and rested on their success a little too much. Some teams are looking ahead and remembering there is still time to make changes. A vision is what gives the team a target, internal motivation (also know was a Big Why) keeps them moving forward and coaching makes them better week after week!
What is your Vision? Is it big enough to give you something to move towards?
When was the last time you thought about why you were doing what you do? Do you have a BIG WHY powering you to get there?
Who is coaching you and helping lead you to the next level week after week?

3)This month our kids teach us the power and ease of lead generation. That’s right, our kids. We let them dress up in crazy costumes, we hand them a plastic pumpkin or a pillow case and we send them out into the world to knock on doors, walk through malls into each store and no matter where they are they have to talk to strangers! They might be saying “trick or treat” and receiving a piece of candy for their efforts.
Who are you talking to and asking your own version of “trick or treat?”

The year is far from over and there is plenty of time to FINISH STRONG, recast a VISION and earn the TREATS that come from your chosen form of lead generation!

Happy Autumn!

Business Workouts

What makes gyms like OrangeTheory Fitness, CrossFit and SoulCycle such a success? And how does that matter to you in your business?

The current success that is being seen in the fitness world is in the way these businesses have changed how people workout — and how they feel about it. Success leaves clues, so let’s have a look at them and how they can help you outside of the gym.

  1. Control the calendar

The first thing these programs do is set a schedule They tell you when the classes are offered and you jump through hoops to show up because they have something that you value.

Are you controlling your calendar or are you jumping through hoops to meet with clients when they want? Then you miss out on important family events, meals, and the always important lead creation time? Remember, as the professional, you have something the client will value so keep control of your own calendar. Do doctors, dentists, lawyers and other professionals jump as soon as someone calls? Why do you?

  1. Work in groups

The next factor in the a success of these fitness programs is group classes. These give you the opportunity to have others watch what you do and learn from them in return. This lets you copy a gym-mate if you didn’t understand the coach. This lets you compete with someone and up your game. This lets you share challenges and wins together.

Many people head into work and then lock themselves in their private office without any group accountability. Sit in the open. Bring others to sit with you. This will then allow you to listen to each other, compete with each other and share challenges and wins with each other. Even better, bring a group of people and the energy that comes with everyone “working out” together!

  1. Be accountable

One of the most powerful tools to lead someone towards success is accountability, and that is something that these programs offer. When you workout alone, do you run as fast as you can while on the treadmill or do you just jog? Do you lift weights to push yourself or just impress yourself? Having others doing the same thing you are shows you that baseline to strive for or to break through.

Having a group to generate new business with not only teaches you better how to do it, it makes sure that succeed and don’t settle!

  1. Mix it up

There are challenges and changes each and every day you attend one of these workouts. Nobody wants to do the same exact thing day after day after day after day. We look for distractions, changes and excitement around us all the time. These successful gyms bring that to you with a different workout each day (even if elements are the same) and opportunities to show yourself how far you have progressed.

Most people don’t do what they know they should do because they are looking for distraction and change. Prepare for it instead, and move your lead generation location. Move your lead generation time. Move your lead generation target and call your sphere of influence today, your family tomorrow and past clients on the third day. The elements stay the same with changes to keep the challenge fun.

Maybe you aren’t ready to franchise yourself like these highly successful gyms, yet you can get more than just a good workout from them. If you pay attention, you can learn lessons of success and end up a lot less sweaty!

Look in the mirror!

Isn’t it interesting how your reticular activating system can really kick in on certain things.

  • Maybe you are looking at buying a car, and you start to see the type of car you are thinking about purchasing everywhere.
  • Maybe you are about to get married and all of a sudden it seems like everyone around you is getting married.
  • Maybe you hear an amazing piece of advice and it keeps showing up everywhere you look.

I found myself in just that situation recently and I wanted to share this advice that kept popping up in my world with each of you.

LOOK IN THE MIRROR!mirror

There are many reasons to look in the mirror and the first reason came from my mother. If your home life was anything like mine, each morning you were reminded to look in the mirror before you left the house. Of course in my home the reminding sounded a little more like, “did you even look at yourself in the mirror?”

Yes, it matters how we present ourselves.

mirror competitionThe second reason to look into a mirror is to beat the best competitor you will ever face (in anything) and that is yourself! Have you noticed how gyms have mirrors everywhere? It is not to make the location look bigger. It is to have you watching your competition, yourself. Personal trainers will tell you again and again that the only competitor that can truly beat you is staring back at you in that mirror!
If you want to be your best, beat the person staring back at you.

mirror self reflectionThe third reason I share with you today is one that Gary Keller reminded many recently and that is “if you want to find someone to blame, just look in the mirror.” This is usually the last place we want to look even though it should be the first.
Before you blame others, figure out where something went wrong and what you can learn from the experience.

————

Remember these 3 tips each time you pass a mirror…

1) Dress to impress!

2) Your biggest competition is right in front of you.

3) If you want to blame someone, they are looking right back at you.

Have a Masters Mindset

For one weekend every year the eyes of the sporting world are looking at Augusta, Georgia. This year was no different and it is one that will be remembered thanks to a little history made at The Masters. Here’s the best part, you can decide which way you will remember this weekend.
Here’s what happened…
masters-logoJordan Spieth collapsed on the 12th hole of the final round of the Masters. He only had 8 holes left in the biggest golf tournament. He had a 5 stroke lead and looked like there was nothing that was going to stop him from winning the event. Jordan, at 22 years of age, is the defending champion and would have become only the 4th golfer to win in back to back years. If he held on to win the sports world would have been asking if he was the next Tiger, the next (Jack) Nicklaus and one of the greatest to play the game of golf. Sadly, this conversation did not occur.
Instead Jordan Spieth got ready to tee off at the 12th hole, a par 3, and after finding the water twice, and a bunker once, he ended the hole with a 7 (4 over par) and he never recovered.
Meanwhile, Danny Willett an excellent golfer in his own right, ranked just outside of the top #10 in the world and someone who most people could not pick out of a line-up took the lead and won the tournament and the coveted green jacket.
Now imagine how that could be you. Things are working well for you. You are having success at work and things almost feel too easy. Everything is moving along and all cylinders are clicking. Then all of a sudden you have a bad day. This bad day could be caused by something outside of work, or maybe it is work related. How do we keep moving forward so we don’t have a collapse that puts an end to an amazing week, month or even year? How do we make sure that we can get back up and are able to get back on top?
It is all about having the right mindset! This is the main focus of The ONE Thing Workshop. Some of the things that you can learn and work on improving is how to create powerful habits, live a counter balanced life and surround yourself with the right people. Find out when The ONE Thing Workshop will be in your area and join me.
How is your mindset? Will you remember The Masters of 2016 as a great come from behind win for Willett or will you remember it as the collapse of Spieth?
Oh and while all of that was happening the Golden State Warriors tied the Chicago Bulls with their 72 win of the NBA season and a chance to set a new record at 73 wins, something that has never been done before.
Don’t forget that while many things can distract us and pull our focus, there is always the chance that someone is coming out of what seems to be nowhere to set records behind you!
