Choose your own adventure

Have you ever wanted to be an author? You are one already! You are writing your own Choose Your Own Adventure story each and every day of your life.

Do you remember reading the Choose Your Own Adventure books? You might have been lost at sea or searching for treasure or maybe you even discovered aliens! As you read into the book you were given choices to make and that sent you to different pages in the book. The best part about the Choose Your Own Adventure books was that you could reread them and make different choices all from the comfort of your own chair.

Life is the same as a Choose Your Own Adventure book except that we can’t peak at the other page to see what our choice has led us to. Sometimes we do get the chance to repeat a choice as George Santayana said “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Although that usually means we made the wrong choice the first time.

One choice will have a domino effect on other choices just like in the Choose Your Own Adventure books. If you have made the choice to get in better shape that will have an impact on your choices about what to eat and your exercise plan.

In the Choose Your Own Adventure books you were always rewarded for making the morally or ethically correct choice and you were often rewarded for hard-working choices. Are you following those rules in your life as well?

Do you choose to make one more sales call or call it a day?
Do you choose to grade one more paper from your students or turn on the tv?
Do you choose to  get up and work out or stay in bed for an extra half an hour?

You might not like all the choices you have before you. You might be fearful of the outcome from one of the choices as it could mean an end to a relationship or looking for a new job. You might feel that you are backed into a corner and have no choice. You can always find a way out as long as you are willing to deal with the choice you make.

Workaholics remember that you are also making a choice as you stay at work longer or bring work home with you. You are choosing work over relationships and interaction.

Some choices need to be made now to allow for other choices to be available to us later, such as working harder now to afford that vacation later. Just remember each choice has a consequence to it.

We wish that life could be as simple as a Choose Your Own Adventure book and we could put it down or just flip back a few pages when we make the wrong choice. Instead, be ready for the choice you make might be the one that leads you to something beautiful!

This morning I had to make the choice of a little more sleep or getting up for an early morning bike ride. I chose the bike ride and was rewarded with beauty.

Chadalyst – Make a list of all of the choices you have made over the past week (remember everything is a choice) and find a pattern. Are you making the best choices for you?

Time flies when…

We have all heard the expression that “time flies when we are having fun” and yet there is so much more to it.

Why does time fly when we are having fun? It flies because we are distracted and not paying attention to the clock. We are enjoying our life and making wonderful memories. We are being distracted from the small stuff. Our internal clock stops keeping track of all the things we need to get done and allows time to fly past.
Then there are times that we are doing something we don’t want to do or that is taking a lot of effort. Maybe that is the effort of running a race. It might be the effort of having to sit through another dull meeting at the office. For you it could be waiting in the dentist office for your turn. Any of these things make time feel like it is moving at the pace of a snail.

Interestingly enough, an hour is an hour, a minute is a minute, and a second is a second and that never changes. A great day might feel like it is over too quickly yet it takes the same 24 hours, 1440 minutes or 86,400 seconds as that other day that seemed as though it would never end.

The question is if you have the same amount of time either way, which way would you prefer to pass those moments?

If you said really slowly so you can feel like you have more time then we wish you the best in a slow life that you are subjecting yourself to.

On the other hand if you said, let the hours fly by, then we challenge you to fill each of those hours with things that you love to do! This will make the time feel like it is just racing through your fingers in a great way. Play sports, find a career you enjoy, make time for your family, learn a language, take a trip and whatever else fires you up. In other words forget that bucket list of things you might get to at some point and grab for the carousel ring.

Time is going to pass one way or another so enjoy it as it passes, quickly we hope.

Fear Factor: Popular tv show or your life?

Did you ever watch the hit show Fear Factor? Many did and many will pretend they never did. Some will claim watching it as a guilty pleasure and some of you will proudly claim to have never missed an episode.

This is not a review of the show. This is a look at the many powerful lessons that Fear Factor can teach us.

Let’s take a look at how the show worked and the lessons we should learn.

Contestants would appear on the show unaware what was ahead for them.
-This sounds like almost every day in your life doesn’t it? You wake up and have no idea what is ahead for you. You think you have a handle on what is to come and sometimes it works like you think. Then again, sometimes life decides to change the plans and greets you with a flat tire, an unhappy customer, an ill family member or who knows what.

What do you fear that could be a part of any day of your life?

  • fear being alone?
  • fear heights?
  • fear spiders or snakes?
  • fear commitment?
  • fear the dark?

Once the contestants were on the show and found out some of the challenges ahead of them they had no choice other than face their fear.
-Again this is just like your life. When that unhappy customer comes in to your store or when your day puts a challenge in front of you what do you do? Do you quit and run home to hide under your blankets or do you stand up to the challenge and take it head on? You might not like it and you have to remember to face the fear that stands before you.

After each challenge some of the contestants on the show were sent home. Maybe their time was the slowest or they collected the lowest number of objects from a challenge or maybe they gave in to the fear.
-You might not win each challenge that life puts in your path and that is ok. As long as you learn from it just in case you get the chance for the same challenge one more time in your life.

At the end of the show one contestant is left standing and declared the winner. They would win a cash prize and the fame.
-As you face each of your fears and overcome them you will also be declared a winner in life and you will feel the power that comes from the confidence boost.*

Probably the most important lesson that we learn from the show (and the contestants might not have learned this one) is that we shouldn’t eat things like living worms, goat eyes or other parts of other animals.

Face your fears head on and come out a winner, just like the contestants from Fear Factor!

Forget your bucket list and grab for your carousel rings.

Have you ever heard the term, bucket list? It is a list of things to do before you die. The expression comes from the term “kicked the bucket.” Don’t worry this blog is not morbid, just stay with us…

Squirrel moment (that is a small distraction that doesn’t matter) It was also quite an entertaining movie with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman as two terminally ill guys that follow their list of things to do before they die.

A bucket list is something you are told to create by many inspirational trainers, coaches and leaders. They ask you to do this to help you figure out the things that you want to do before you “kick the bucket.” While we hope that is no time soon of course, we also have no idea of when that will be. Do you?

Since you don’t know when you might reach the end, you have no idea of what to do with your bucket list.We think it is wonderful that you wish to cage dive with sharks or skydive or see Greece or write your book or whatever items made your list. The important question becomes, when should you start?

Right now!

Forget your bucket list and figure out what your carousel rings are.

Grab for your carousel rings

Carousel rings, for those of you that have no idea, are rings that were hung next to a carousel for the riders to attempt to grab as they went past on their horse. The rider would then toss the ring at a target while continuing around for their ride. If you were lucky enough to grab the brass ring from the group, you usually earned yourself a free ride.

How does this apply to you?

You might have this great bucket list as we mentioned already. It is filled with amazing things you are going to do….someday. You just hope that day will be before you run out of time.

These, carousel rings are the short-term goals that you are going to grab as you go past. Not your “someday” items that are on your bucket list. These are things you are going to do in the next 3-6 months!

What sort of things were on your bucket list that you really want to accomplish? Get them off your bucket list and make them carousel rings and don’t wait any longer!

Sit down to start that book. Set your appointment to jump from a plane. Reserve your trip to Greece. If you don’t do these things now…when will you?

You might never know when your time is up and you need to have finished the items on your bucket list. What you do know is that the music on the carousel is about to stop and you better grab those rings right away!

Chadalyst – Write out 2 Carousel Rings with timelines on when you will get them completed. Remember this is no farther out than 3-6 months. Book the reservation now, set the dates, or even better just get started! Post in the comments below what you are going to do and when so we can all share or post on the question on our Facebook page.

Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road?

We have all heard the joke before and there are many different answers for what that chicken is up to. Some guesses are funny, some you need to be a certain age to understand and some are just so off the wall that you might find yourself laughing uncomfortably.

It all comes down to this…we have no idea why that chicken does anything it does.

While driving home the other day there were chickens on the side of the road and one decided to make the mad dash across the street. Never thought I would live long enough to actually see a chicken cross a road. Even after seeing it for myself there is still no answer to the life long question of why did the chicken cross the road.

Nothing was chasing the chicken. There wasn’t anything more interesting looking on the other side of the road. Heck, two of the chickens stayed put while this one chicken made the run of a lifetime.

Will we ever know why the chicken crossed the road? Sadly, probably not.

This brings us to the even more important question, then why did the chicken cross the road.

Why do you do some of the things that you do?

That is a question that is being asked by many around you.

Most of the time you know why you are doing whatever that might be. You might believe it is for the opportunity to climb the corporate ladder. You think that it is a chance for you to be able to help others. Maybe for you it is to get the spotlight finally. Meanwhile, the rest of the world looks at you and wonders what you are doing and why you just did that.

You are that chicken!

Do you stop to explain everything you do or do you just find yourself doing things?

Do you ask for permission or ask for forgiveness?

Are you the chicken running across the road or are you the chicken that stays put? Which do you want to be? You can be whichever you choose to be. Just make a choice and get out of the middle of the road finally.

Don’t become the losing end of a chicken crossing the road joke. Stand firm once you make your choice and run for it!.

Chadalyst -What is something you have been putting off doing? Head down, don’t think of the traffic…just run for it!

Refuel your life for free. Step 5

Through this week we have been looking at how to refuel your life for free. In yesterday’s posting we looked at the fourth step in refueling your life. Make sure you check back to the first 4 steps (links posted below) as we continue to cover how you feel when you are running on empty and how you feel when your personal tank is filled.

Hopefully you have been following the Chadalyst posted at the end of each blog and you are already feeling better.

Click on any of the first four steps to learn more…

  1. Garbage in = garbage out – make sure you eat right!
  2. Sleep enough for your body to recharge
  3. Exercise daily
  4. Make a fool of yourself
Now for the fifth and final suggestion in helping you increase your energy, remove your stress and refuel your life without the aid of a 5 Hour Energy drink.
It is now time for you to do something for you finally.
You are doing for everyone else in your life. Your family, your job and of course your customers. Our question is what are you doing for yourself?
  • Are you reading a book you enjoy for a few moments a day?
  • Are you having your lunch at the park on the bench and taking in some sun?
  • Are you calling a friend on the drive home and sharing in memories?
  • Are you seeing a movie you really want to watch?
  • Are you having the piece of chocolate cake you have been thinking about? Just remember step 1!
  • Any and all of these things are great places to start refueling your inner tank.

One of the things that you can really do for yourself is remind yourself how awesome you really are! You might think that sounds a little crazy and silly, remember it is all about your mindset on this one.

Positive affirmations will help you get your mind in the right place each and every day. You have heard this before, we know, and we are wondering why you are not yet doing this.

Create a positive affirmation that you can say out loud each day. Post your affirmation in your bathroom to read after your shower in the morning. Post your affirmations in your car so you say them each time you get in and out of your car. Post your affirmations any place you see on a regular basis. There are many you can find online if you can’t think of your own.
If it is ok I will share with you the one I say each and every day…

“I am a positive, patient and powerful, person, parent presenter and partner” (great alliteration don’t you think?) and I have a little dance that goes with it – did I just make a fool of myself in front of you? If I did, that is great as it means step 4 has been checked off for the day! Hope you are laughing with me and not at me as my fuel gage is rising!

You can have a full tank with just a few small changes in your daily routine and break up your status quo. We hope that this series has helped you fill up.

Chadalyst – Write your positive affirmation and post it! We really mean post it…below…as your comment on this blog. Let us all share in your affirmation.

Status Quo, Oh No!

We have all heard the term status quo, meaning the existing state or condition. Some of you reading this blog love the status quo and some of you are longing for what used to be the status quo in your life.

The question today is this…Is the status quo really good for anyone?

You get up and follow your morning routine, whatever that might be.

You get into your car and head for work.

You listen to the same radio station, drive the same route and park in the same spot each and every business day.

Your day at work is basically the same from answering emails, to meetings you have to attend and even to the conversations you have with your co-workers.

As your day comes to an end you leave the office get back in the car and follow the same path back home to engage in your evening routine and keep the status quo.

You arrive home.

You help your children with their school work (if you have children.)

You have dinner and share in the same conversations you had the day and week before.

You sit to watch the same shows on the tv and then head to bed to bring an end to the day.

Congratulations! The status quo has been upheld for another day. You got paid the same for the day, did the same things and kept your existing state or condition the same. You probably didn’t learn much, didn’t venture out much and continued to keep things moving forward safely.

If you take an honest look, is this how your life is going?

Then for one week of each year you take a vacation (at least we hope you do.) Wherever it is you go, the status quo has been thrown out the window.

You sleep late or maybe wake up early with excitement.

You eat different foods at different times (everyone has dessert on vacation.)

You can’t find your normal shows or radio station so you read, you listen to different music, you have different conversations and you are happy!

You ignore the status quo and live in a world of constant change.

Sadly vacation comes to an end and you find yourself back home and driving your normal route, having the same conversations again and falling back to your status quo.

The status quo isn’t good for anyone…not you, not your family and not your career. Shake it up and get out of the existing state you are in and start existing in a state of change. Change doesn’t have to be big (see the Chadalyst for this blog) to happen, it just has to be something that you are willing to embrace!

Some people are kicking and screaming just reading this that we have challenged their status quo and that is ok, it shouldn’t be easy. Easy is the status quo and together we can change it up and watch the benefits of change in our lives.

Chadalyst(this is not a typo this is a catalyst provided by Chad to give you one thing to take away from this blog and do to help you grow) Change something up and start with something small like driving a different route to work, listening to a different station on the way or even something as small and simple a start as sit in a different seat at your table or on your sofa! Small changes will help you get ready for bigger ones!

May the 4th be with you

There are many people in your life that bring you wisdom. Sometimes that comes from a parent, a supervisor, a friend, and even at times, from a child. Now and then wisdom can even come to you from a wise puppet and there was none wiser than Yoda.

This green pupet that stood just under 2′ 2″ and that sounded so much like Grover, thanks to Frank Oz, was a powerful force (pardon the pun) in the mindset of many.

It does not matter if you are young or old, Yoda has crossed your path. Once you were able to understand what Yoda was saying through his backwards english you will see that some of his powerful sayings are all you need to remember when you need to adjust your mindset.

Let’s start with probably the most famous, most quoted and misquoted of Yoda’s words of advice…

“Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.”

When you are feeling challenged, just remember this lesson. A mentor of mine used to remind us of this rule all the time. We would be asked to try and put our pen down. Go ahead, try this yourself…try to put your pen down. It isn’t possible. You either DID put your pen down or you DID NOT. Thankfully my mentor did not also have to live in hiding and we didn’t have to visit a hut in a swamp to get wise advice.

There are times when success is not possible where we currently are in life. Maybe you can’t lift that 300 pound barbell or maybe you can’t run a 4 minute mile. If it is something that you want to do, then follow Yoda’s sage advice and just go out and do it. Work up to it first, just remember there is no try.

Another of the jedi master’s sayings was, “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering” You don’t want to suffer do you? People will say that suffering makes you stronger and it doesn’t seem that Yoda would agree with that comment. Hate is what brings suffering, anger brings hate and fear is what leads to anger. Figure out where you are in that path and stop it right away. Do not try to stop it, just stop with the fear, the anger and the hate and live in a place that brings you happiness and where you can overcome your fear.

The third piece of wisdom that we want to take a look at today is when Yoda said to Luke Skywalker, “Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size do you?” Yoda was not a tall creature and still he was filled with the power of the force. You might not be able to handle a light saber like Yoda or lift a crashed X-Wing fighter from the swamp and still that should not stop you from any goal you have in your sight. You might be too small, or too big and that doesn’t matter. Your goal might be too large for others to even see, and that shouldn’t matter either. Forget your size and know that you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to and work towards.

We celebrate May 4th each year as Star Wars day (who else would have thought of the marketing potential of using the calendar like this) and hope that taking a moment to listen to the wise Yoda has helped you figure out how to live long and prosper.

***the writer is well aware of the Star Trek reference, it was not a mistake.

Chadalyst – (this is not a typo this is a catalyst provided by Chad to give you one thing to take away from this blog and do to help you grow) In honor of Yoda, do not try. To help you with this find an accountability partner and any time they hear you say you are going to try something, you have to pay them $1. This will help you remove this word from your vocabulary.

Soup Cook-Off Could you win?

Have you ever been to a soup cook-off?

Here is what it is like…
You walk up to register…
and then you pay your fee…
and then you get your badge…
and then you get in line for the first entry…
and then you get your sampling, just a small taste of their soup in a small ramekin…
and then you get in line for the next entry…
and then repeat until you have tasted all of the different entries all the time attempting to remember what you enjoyed or disliked about each entry in the cook-off.

That sounds simple enough, doesn’t it?

Then you start asking yourself, was the first one a little too spicy or not spicy enough? What about the 5th one and the 7th one? You won’t forget the 2nd one as you are still breathing flames from that sample.

Was the soup at the 3rd contestant the one that had the shrimp in it or was that the 4th one?

Which one was it that you could eat a whole bowl of that you wanted to name the winner?

Finally after remembering one from the next you get back in line for the one that you have selected as the best of the best and turn your badge over so that they can claim another vote while you walk away with a full bowl of soup from your top choice.

This sounds like a win-win proposition for everyone. Everyone that is except all of the other contestants. They had their chance and just couldn’t win your vote, why was that?

What does any of this have to do with you, other than a delicious bowl of soup?

What happens when you have that appointment with a potential client or a customer walks into your store? If your product is something sold in a different store (like soup on the shelf of a grocery store, or running shoes on the shelf of a shoe store) what happens for you?

Just like the chef at the soup cook-off you have 30 seconds or less to make your point and make sure that your potential client votes for you and what you represent.

There are many people out there that will teach you how to write the perfect “elevator speech” or as a mentor of mine called it a “Scooby-Doo moment” (you know the one where Scooby turned his head to the side and gave you that look that said tell me more) The problem isn’t writing the perfect elevator speech the problem is delivering it.

Deliver it with polish and passion. Make sure you know what you are going to say and no matter how many times you say it, you still get excited about getting to tell someone what it is that you do or you represent.

Not sure what you represent, shame on you. Stop everything else and figure that out right now before you continue. There are companies that represent the best taste, some represent the best possible customer service and some represent longevity and stamina in their field.

Here is a piece of free advice – if you have figured what you represent and you don’t get passionate talking about it for the 73rd time in a week, get out of what it is you do and go find something else to do. You deserve to be happy, enjoy what you do and always find passion in it!

To return to our soup cook-off sometimes other people vote for other soup choices and that is alright. Figure out your perfect customer and target what is they would find in you to give you their vote and become a client for life!

Chadalyst(this is not a typo this is a catalyst provided by Chad to give you one thing to take away from this blog and do to help you grow)
Find a quiet place to be alone and figure out what brings you passion and how that can tie in to what you are doing – helping the environment, saving animals, providing the best customer service for a certain group or maybe having the best taste in your product – once you can figure out what you represent and attach it with something that brings you passion, you will be ready to share with everyone
