Choose your own adventure

Have you ever wanted to be an author? You are one already! You are writing your own Choose Your Own Adventure story each and every day of your life.

Do you remember reading the Choose Your Own Adventure books? You might have been lost at sea or searching for treasure or maybe you even discovered aliens! As you read into the book you were given choices to make and that sent you to different pages in the book. The best part about the Choose Your Own Adventure books was that you could reread them and make different choices all from the comfort of your own chair.

Life is the same as a Choose Your Own Adventure book except that we can’t peak at the other page to see what our choice has led us to. Sometimes we do get the chance to repeat a choice as George Santayana said “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Although that usually means we made the wrong choice the first time.

One choice will have a domino effect on other choices just like in the Choose Your Own Adventure books. If you have made the choice to get in better shape that will have an impact on your choices about what to eat and your exercise plan.

In the Choose Your Own Adventure books you were always rewarded for making the morally or ethically correct choice and you were often rewarded for hard-working choices. Are you following those rules in your life as well?

Do you choose to make one more sales call or call it a day?
Do you choose to grade one more paper from your students or turn on the tv?
Do you choose to  get up and work out or stay in bed for an extra half an hour?

You might not like all the choices you have before you. You might be fearful of the outcome from one of the choices as it could mean an end to a relationship or looking for a new job. You might feel that you are backed into a corner and have no choice. You can always find a way out as long as you are willing to deal with the choice you make.

Workaholics remember that you are also making a choice as you stay at work longer or bring work home with you. You are choosing work over relationships and interaction.

Some choices need to be made now to allow for other choices to be available to us later, such as working harder now to afford that vacation later. Just remember each choice has a consequence to it.

We wish that life could be as simple as a Choose Your Own Adventure book and we could put it down or just flip back a few pages when we make the wrong choice. Instead, be ready for the choice you make might be the one that leads you to something beautiful!

This morning I had to make the choice of a little more sleep or getting up for an early morning bike ride. I chose the bike ride and was rewarded with beauty.

Chadalyst – Make a list of all of the choices you have made over the past week (remember everything is a choice) and find a pattern. Are you making the best choices for you?

Lessons from a Great White Shark

One of the most feared and powerful creatures on our planet is the great white shark. It is a killing machine that has survived evolutionary changes for generations. One thing to know about this magnificent creation is that if a great white shark stops swimming it dies. The shark must always be in motion.

The same thing in your life.

Are you always moving or are you standing still?

We are not only talking actual physical action, we are talking about your mind as well.

When was the last time you learned something new?
When was the last time you took a class?
When was the last time you researched a new topic or area or culture?

As children most of us attend school for 13 of our first 18 years of life. Some of us continue for years after that. Some of you might even be life long students. When we complete our formal education is when the real learning begins. We learn more and more about ourselves and the type of adult we are going to become.

What type of adult are you?

Are you the type of adult that is happy with the status quo? Can you go through your routine, fear change and find yourself happy and content with that?
OR
Are you the type of adult that is looking to grow at every opportunity? Learning new skills and finding people to help you grow in your life?

Are you standing still or are you moving and growing?

As the great white must continue to move so must you!

Stop standing still!

Chadalyst – Pick up a book that will help you expand your thinking and get reading! Don’t want to read a helpful book…sign up for a class to help you learn a new skill. Let us know what book you are reading or what skill you are learning.

Time flies when…

We have all heard the expression that “time flies when we are having fun” and yet there is so much more to it.

Why does time fly when we are having fun? It flies because we are distracted and not paying attention to the clock. We are enjoying our life and making wonderful memories. We are being distracted from the small stuff. Our internal clock stops keeping track of all the things we need to get done and allows time to fly past.
Then there are times that we are doing something we don’t want to do or that is taking a lot of effort. Maybe that is the effort of running a race. It might be the effort of having to sit through another dull meeting at the office. For you it could be waiting in the dentist office for your turn. Any of these things make time feel like it is moving at the pace of a snail.

Interestingly enough, an hour is an hour, a minute is a minute, and a second is a second and that never changes. A great day might feel like it is over too quickly yet it takes the same 24 hours, 1440 minutes or 86,400 seconds as that other day that seemed as though it would never end.

The question is if you have the same amount of time either way, which way would you prefer to pass those moments?

If you said really slowly so you can feel like you have more time then we wish you the best in a slow life that you are subjecting yourself to.

On the other hand if you said, let the hours fly by, then we challenge you to fill each of those hours with things that you love to do! This will make the time feel like it is just racing through your fingers in a great way. Play sports, find a career you enjoy, make time for your family, learn a language, take a trip and whatever else fires you up. In other words forget that bucket list of things you might get to at some point and grab for the carousel ring.

Time is going to pass one way or another so enjoy it as it passes, quickly we hope.

Fear Factor: Popular tv show or your life?

Did you ever watch the hit show Fear Factor? Many did and many will pretend they never did. Some will claim watching it as a guilty pleasure and some of you will proudly claim to have never missed an episode.

This is not a review of the show. This is a look at the many powerful lessons that Fear Factor can teach us.

Let’s take a look at how the show worked and the lessons we should learn.

Contestants would appear on the show unaware what was ahead for them.
-This sounds like almost every day in your life doesn’t it? You wake up and have no idea what is ahead for you. You think you have a handle on what is to come and sometimes it works like you think. Then again, sometimes life decides to change the plans and greets you with a flat tire, an unhappy customer, an ill family member or who knows what.

What do you fear that could be a part of any day of your life?

  • fear being alone?
  • fear heights?
  • fear spiders or snakes?
  • fear commitment?
  • fear the dark?

Once the contestants were on the show and found out some of the challenges ahead of them they had no choice other than face their fear.
-Again this is just like your life. When that unhappy customer comes in to your store or when your day puts a challenge in front of you what do you do? Do you quit and run home to hide under your blankets or do you stand up to the challenge and take it head on? You might not like it and you have to remember to face the fear that stands before you.

After each challenge some of the contestants on the show were sent home. Maybe their time was the slowest or they collected the lowest number of objects from a challenge or maybe they gave in to the fear.
-You might not win each challenge that life puts in your path and that is ok. As long as you learn from it just in case you get the chance for the same challenge one more time in your life.

At the end of the show one contestant is left standing and declared the winner. They would win a cash prize and the fame.
-As you face each of your fears and overcome them you will also be declared a winner in life and you will feel the power that comes from the confidence boost.*

Probably the most important lesson that we learn from the show (and the contestants might not have learned this one) is that we shouldn’t eat things like living worms, goat eyes or other parts of other animals.

Face your fears head on and come out a winner, just like the contestants from Fear Factor!

Chadalyst -What do you fear? We believe one of the things most people fear is success. Tell us what you fear in the comments and what you are going to do to overcome your fear.

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

The first image that goes through your mind when you hear those words of, “mirror, mirror on the wall” is probably the evil queen from Snow White. While the Evil Queen was just that, evil, the mirror was not. The Magic Mirror spoke nothing other than the truth. As we know from the story the mirror tells the queen that she is the fairest in the land, until the day that Snow White becomes of age.

We are not here to discuss the story of Snow White or cover the classic tale of good versus evil. Instead we are here to look deeper into that mirror.

When you look into the mirror what question is it that you ask? Are you asking who is the fairest in the land? Are you asking where your hair has gone or where those strange new hairs came from? Are you asking what lies ahead for you or maybe you are asking what you did with all of those days that have already passed.

The questions are important and the answer is really what we are here to take a look at. As the Magic Mirror always did, your mirror does the same when it answers you. It answers you honestly.

When you ask the mirror about the spare tire around your midsection, it is your choices that helped that tire grow and your choice that keep the tire there.

When you ask for confidence or beauty, do you see a confident person or a beautiful person or are you not having that confidence in your beauty and seeing neither when you look at the reflection?

Stand up to that mirror and start getting the answers that you want!

You ARE confident
You ARE beautiful
You ARE unstoppable
You ARE all of that and more!
Now…believe it when you look into that mirror and that is the answer that will come back to you!

Are you willing to look into that mirror and ask the tough question? More importantly are you willing to hear the answers?

Chadalyst -What do you want to change the most? Go look into your mirror and let it know what is coming!

Forget your bucket list and grab for your carousel rings.

Have you ever heard the term, bucket list? It is a list of things to do before you die. The expression comes from the term “kicked the bucket.” Don’t worry this blog is not morbid, just stay with us…

Squirrel moment (that is a small distraction that doesn’t matter) It was also quite an entertaining movie with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman as two terminally ill guys that follow their list of things to do before they die.

A bucket list is something you are told to create by many inspirational trainers, coaches and leaders. They ask you to do this to help you figure out the things that you want to do before you “kick the bucket.” While we hope that is no time soon of course, we also have no idea of when that will be. Do you?

Since you don’t know when you might reach the end, you have no idea of what to do with your bucket list.We think it is wonderful that you wish to cage dive with sharks or skydive or see Greece or write your book or whatever items made your list. The important question becomes, when should you start?

Right now!

Forget your bucket list and figure out what your carousel rings are.

Grab for your carousel rings

Carousel rings, for those of you that have no idea, are rings that were hung next to a carousel for the riders to attempt to grab as they went past on their horse. The rider would then toss the ring at a target while continuing around for their ride. If you were lucky enough to grab the brass ring from the group, you usually earned yourself a free ride.

How does this apply to you?

You might have this great bucket list as we mentioned already. It is filled with amazing things you are going to do….someday. You just hope that day will be before you run out of time.

These, carousel rings are the short-term goals that you are going to grab as you go past. Not your “someday” items that are on your bucket list. These are things you are going to do in the next 3-6 months!

What sort of things were on your bucket list that you really want to accomplish? Get them off your bucket list and make them carousel rings and don’t wait any longer!

Sit down to start that book. Set your appointment to jump from a plane. Reserve your trip to Greece. If you don’t do these things now…when will you?

You might never know when your time is up and you need to have finished the items on your bucket list. What you do know is that the music on the carousel is about to stop and you better grab those rings right away!

Chadalyst – Write out 2 Carousel Rings with timelines on when you will get them completed. Remember this is no farther out than 3-6 months. Book the reservation now, set the dates, or even better just get started! Post in the comments below what you are going to do and when so we can all share or post on the question on our Facebook page.

Don't wait and grab your carousel rings right away

Secret Agent

Sneaking through the dark shadows. Slipping into doorways and around corners. Willing others to not notice them as the secret agent attempts to complete their mission.

The secret agent goes through their day, their week, their life hoping nobody even notices them and that they can sneak in and sneak out without even being remembered.

Are you this secret agent?

Are you the type of person that sneaks to your job each day, does what you need to do and then sneaks out to return home?

Are you the type of person that outside of the office does your best to not get into the conversation about what it is that you do for a living?

If someone asks you what you do, how do you answer? With a quick short answer that changes the subject or do you straighten up tall and answer the question?

Do you love what you do or are you a secret agent in your life?

During a conversation with someone you are just meeting, what do you do for a living, will be a common question. The way you answer it will tell people a lot about you.

You can always give the routine answer…I’m a lawyer. I’m a real estate agent. I’m a mail carrier.
OR
Take it a step further and give an answer that will open the door to continued conversation, show you love what you do and make sure you are remembered and don’t become that secret agent.

I’m a lawyer becomes I get to help people settle some of the largest conflicts of their lives
I’m a real estate agent becomes I work with population relocation
I’m a mail carrier becomes I deliver good news and bad news to people all day long

Be proud of what you do and instead of being a secret agent be a super hero and let everyone see you coming.

Don’t worry, you do not need to wear the bright-colored skin-tight latex outfits (unless you really want to.)

Chadalyst -Take a moment and find an outragous way to describe what you do for a living.
