It’s NOT one thing

Many of us hear something, then we latch on to it, and then we run with it. Have you ever stopped to wonder if what you heard was accurate?

  • How many times have you heard “it” incorrectly, like a game of broken telephone?
  • Have you ever heard “it” just how you wanted to hear it?
  • Do you believe that you might have heard “it” in a way that is slanted by the person telling it to us?

Have you read the best seller, The ONE Thing? Did you take that to mean ONLY one thing?

That is a thought that can be overwhelming! That will cause paralysis in most people before they are able to move forward. How can ONE thing sum up everything in your life? Simple, it can’t.

It isn’t ONE thing, it’s ONE THING AT A TIME!

The book shows us that there are 7 areas of our lives to focus on. Even though we understand and accept this, we will still attempt to find one thing to fit them all. The 7 areas of focus are:

  1. Spiritual Life7 areas of focus
  2. Physical Health
  3. Personal Life
  4. Key Relationships
  5. Job
  6. Business
  7. Finances

Within these areas we have our ONE thing for each and again, it is one thing at a time.

Maybe your ONE thing with your job is being focused on lead generation. Once that is complete you move on to your job’s next one thing. This might be customer follow up, it might be your website development or maybe it is to meet with a client. Whatever it is, that is what you do next and with the same focus.

Maybe your one thing is to have dinner with the family. If that is what is important for your Key Relationships, then be at the table and be present working on that ONE thing. After dinner you can go check your email, the scores or whatever you just had to check on your phone. Then move to your next one thing with a key relationship. That might be a walk with your spouse, or working on a puzzle with your kids or even some alone time with a book as you change your focus to your Personal Life. You are the only one that can choose what your one thing should be.

While doing whatever it is, be there and be focused on that ONE thing! Once you are finished, then, and only then move on to your NEXT one thing and remember it is ONE THING AT A TIME!

To-Do Lists. Do they help?

You wake up to start the day and your mind naturally starts putting together a to-do list right away.

  • Get breakfast made
  • Feed the pet
  • Workout
  • Prep lunch
  • Answer emails
  • Check what’s happening on Facebook
  • Put gas in the car

The morning list then goes on and on and on and on. You haven’t even gotten to start your work day yet and create that to-do list!

The question we ask, is it good to have a to-do list? Does that help you figure what needs to be done and get through your day?

OR

Does the to-do list slow you down? Does it have you focusing on the things that aren’t really moving you forward?

Many of us like to create to-do lists. That way we can clear all of the thoughts that are running around in our head. By putting them on paper it allows us to stop thinking about them and know we will get them done.

Many of us love to check things off on our to-do list because it makes us feel like we have accomplished something with our day or our time.

A mentor of mine taught me early to create a to-do list each day and then sort the list with the most important thing at the top. He then told me to draw a line between #5 and #6 on the list and my day could not end until the top 5 were complete.

To Do ListAccording to the studies and research shared in The ONE Thing it is time to take that to the extreme. As you create your to-do list, sort it with the most important thing and do the first thing and the first thing only. Once that is done, sort your list once more.

If you have the correct item at the top of your list, completing it should make everything else easier or unnecessary in your world.

Remember that the majority of what you want will come from the minority of what you do.

Overcome a Large Challenge by Making it Small

Have you ever found yourself facing a large challenge and not even sure where to start?

  • Have your taxes piled up and it is April 13th?
  • Have you looked up at your annual goal and realized it is already summer and the year is half over?
  • Have you opened your computer to too many emails to even know where to start your day?

 “When eating an elephant take one bite at a time.” – Creighton Abrams

Most of us have heard Mr Abrams’ quote, although it doesn’t solve the question of which part of the elephant should we bite first?

The answer to that question is one that still challenges most people. We learn how to overcome a large challenge by making it small and still we just stare at the challenge waiting for someone to show us step one.

Step one has now been shown to you. It might not be a bright flashing arrow pointing you in a specific direction. Maybe it won’t be as obvious as the yellow brick road was to Dorothy and Toto. Gary Keller and Jay Papasan made it quite simple when they wrote the focusing question in The ONE Thing.

What is the ONE thing that I can do today, such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?

If you ask yourself this question at the start of your day or at the start of a project the place to start on the path to success should become clear to you.

Take your large challenge and break it down to the smaller challenges using the focusing question. Remember this might take a few steps to get it to the correct starting point.

As shown in this geometric progression a domino can knock over a domino 1 1/2 times larger. What that means is you can see that by knocking down one 2 inch tall domino you are able to knock over something as large as the Leaning Tower of Pisa with your 18th domino in the progression. Find your starting point by going small. Line up your dominoes correctly and before you know it your large challenge will be falling over!

Binge Business

binge watchingDo you block out the weekend when you hear that the next season of House of Cards, Orange is the New Black or Game of Thrones is going to be released?

Do you get caught up on season after season of Dexter, The Walking Dead, 24, Breaking Bad or any of the other series available on Netflix?

Do you record episodes of your favorite shows and watch a few episodes On Demand when you have the chance to get caught up?

If you do any of these things you are a binge watcher. Welcome to the club!

It might be your desire to know what happens next without waiting. It might be your personality that says “I can have it so I will take it.” It might be that you don’t have the time to commit weekly and want to get it over with.

Whichever reason it is, have you stopped to take a moment and considered Binge Business for yourself?

If you can drop in front of a television screen for hours on end to view a show, what is stopping you from dropping yourself in front of a phone and calling ALL of your database in one sitting or door knocking a whole community in one day?

If you can block off the time to catch up on a show, are you able to give your business the same focus and schedule time to do your business’ most important things?

In the world of sales there are people that tell you to put aside a set number of hours each day to focus on your priority. What if it works better for you to binge? Set one day a week to do nothing other than your priority and get it done for the week. Set all of your meetings on one day and power through like the 3rd season of your favorite show.

It doesn’t matter if you watch your shows non-stop binge style, daily or weekly you have the power to do the same thing with your business!

Whether you binge or record shows, we know that the main reason you do it is to avoid commercials!Remember that in your business life as well and skip the interruptions that keep you from the action!

On pace?

3 months down and only 9 to go!

The end of the year always feels far away and then all of a sudden we are looking up and wondering where the time went yet again.

Did you set a goal to start this year? If you didn’t how do you know if you are on pace? If you did set  your goal did you remember to set it big enough or did you let yourself off easy?

Take your goal and divide it by 4 because with the end of March comes the end of the 1st quarter. Now the important question to ask yourself is…Are you on pace to reach your goal?

You might be ahead of your pace with a fast start. Great work to not let the start of the year, the winter weather or the sickness that every other person seemed to get, slow you at all. A fast start allows for the chance to handle a bump in the road with more confidence.

If you are ahead of your pace, maybe you should reevaluate your goal, raise it and push harder this year.

No matter if you leave your goal where it is and plan to fly past it, or if you raise your goal for the remainder of this year, just remember to keep the pressure on and run with the momentum you are creating.momentum snowball

You might be right on target of your pace. This is a great place to be after the first quarter because getting started, even though you have the excitement, is often the hardest place to be. Now that you have created momentum and are moving forward don’t stop for anything.  Your goals are within reach and your year will be a success.

Of course there is always the third answer to the question of your goal and your pace. You might be behind your pace with a slow start to the year. Whatever got in your way, it is already behind you. Leave it there and move on! There is still time to get caught up and ahead. It is very rare that a team goes wire to wire (in first place from day 1 through the championship) and that means that you too can still move into first place on the race to your goals.

Leave it and move on

If an obstacle is still in your way, figure out what it is and the best way around it, over it, under it or even through it. If the obstacle seems overwhelming then it is time to figure out why you want your goal. If your why is big enough it will power you through anything. If your why isn’t pushing or pulling you to success, it is time to rethink why your goal is important and not just a number to achieve.

Don’t wait until the year is over to evaluate your progress. Don’t even wait for the year to be halfway over. Evaluate each quarter, each month, each week and even each day to be sure that you are on pace for your goals because you can and will achieve them if you monitor them.

REALationships

Anyone can go to a networking event and walk away with a stack of contacts. Anyone can attend a business function and meet new people. Anyone can fill a database with names. How many of you create REALationships though?

What do your relationships look like? Are they relationships or REALationships?

Friend RequestWould you say that you have a few really close friends and that is the limit of it?

Would you say that you have a lot of great friends?

Would you say that you have many Facebook friends?

RE is a prefix and listed at Dictionary.com as meaning; to return to a previous condition such as renew or retrace. It could also be indicating repetition of an action such as remarry

Are your relationships just a repetitive action that continues to return to a previous condition or are you creating REALationships?

When we search REAL at Dictionary.com we find that it means true, genuine and even can be defined as sincere. Another definition that comes with REAL is existing or occurring in the physical world. Again we ask you, are you developing REALationships with others?

A REALationship is one that grows. One that is true. One that is sincere. One that is not focused on what it can provide for you. One that is genuine. One you want to develop. A REALationship is one that is in the physical world, not just online.

It is important to have relationships in your life. These are the people who you know and yet don’t know. You know them from work and enough to ask about their kids, and that’s where it ends. These are the people who you contact when you are looking for sponsorship, helping your daughter sell Girl Scout cookies or looking to grow your business.

How do you create REALationships? You listen, you ask great questions, you come from contribution, you give to give and don’t give to get and you care about the other person. You lift your head up from a screen and give your attention.

Each of us can only have a handful of strong REALationships so make sure you give your time and effort to those that you want to help grow, assist and still learn from yourself. Remember that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with, so choose wisely.

Your REALationships are  the people you want to share with, celebrate with and mourn with. These are the people who reach out to you to sponsor you, buy your daughter’s Girl Scout cookies and are always thinking how they can help you grow your business.

REALationships will change in your life as people move, as people change and as people develop other REALationships that impact them. That means to keep it real you must work on it.

Networking done right

From BNI (Business Network International) to Young Professionals and all the networking groups in between there are best practices for networking.

If you are in a professional networking organization then you will have rules, such as 1 person from each profession, each person speaks a certain amount of time, etc…

What about those networking opportunities that are not part of a professional organization?

  • Attending a conventionnetworking
  • A local chamber event
  • A holiday party
  • A PTA meeting

If you are attending any of these opportunities and plan to use them as a networking event here are 4 tips to make the most of it.

1) Don’t just give everyone your card
There is nothing more annoying at an event than when you shove your card into everyone’s hand while they are engaged with someone else.

  • They never asked for your card.
  • They won’t remember why they have your card.
  • They will probably throw your card away, or even worse put you on their follow-up emails that you didn’t want in the first place.

2) Don’t just take everyone else’s card
The flip side of giving everyone your card is that you take everyone’s card and this is just as bad a practice.

  • Why did you take their card in the first place?
  • Do they really want the information you are about to send them or will they just click unsubscribe and hurt your online results.
  • Do you really want to have a business relationship with this person that you don’t know?

3) Have a plan in place in advance
When you go to a networking opportunity have a plan for who you want to meet and why you want to meet them.

  • Are you looking for people in a certain area of the country?
  • Are you looking for people with a specific skill set or experience?
  • Are you looking for people who fit a specific criteria that match yours?

4) Meet the people and remember the people.
This is the key to networking, are you memorable? This is what sets the best networkers apart from the others. After the event is over, even more if it is a convention over more than one day, most people will be on information overload and not remember much. When they get home and calm down, will they remember you? They will if you remember them!

  • Have conversation with the people you are networking with. It is better to network with fewer people and be remembered then to network with everyone in the room and be forgotten in seconds.
  • After your conversation with someone you should be able to make 3 notes about them on the back of their card (now you want their information) to use in future conversations and emails such as things you have in common.
  • Work at sharing an interesting fact about yourself that helps you stand out from the crowd of networkers.
  • Ask more questions and listen more than you talk. You will be remembered for being a great conversationalist.

You can network with everyone and get nothing from the experience or you can have an idea of whom you are looking for at the event, make a connection, be remembered and grow a business relationship with years of positive results.

The choice is yours.
