Binge Business

binge watchingDo you block out the weekend when you hear that the next season of House of Cards, Orange is the New Black or Game of Thrones is going to be released?

Do you get caught up on season after season of Dexter, The Walking Dead, 24, Breaking Bad or any of the other series available on Netflix?

Do you record episodes of your favorite shows and watch a few episodes On Demand when you have the chance to get caught up?

If you do any of these things you are a binge watcher. Welcome to the club!

It might be your desire to know what happens next without waiting. It might be your personality that says “I can have it so I will take it.” It might be that you don’t have the time to commit weekly and want to get it over with.

Whichever reason it is, have you stopped to take a moment and considered Binge Business for yourself?

If you can drop in front of a television screen for hours on end to view a show, what is stopping you from dropping yourself in front of a phone and calling ALL of your database in one sitting or door knocking a whole community in one day?

If you can block off the time to catch up on a show, are you able to give your business the same focus and schedule time to do your business’ most important things?

In the world of sales there are people that tell you to put aside a set number of hours each day to focus on your priority. What if it works better for you to binge? Set one day a week to do nothing other than your priority and get it done for the week. Set all of your meetings on one day and power through like the 3rd season of your favorite show.

It doesn’t matter if you watch your shows non-stop binge style, daily or weekly you have the power to do the same thing with your business!

commercial-break

Whether you binge or record shows, we know that the main reason you do it is to avoid commercials!Remember that in your business life as well and skip the interruptions that keep you from the action!

On pace?

3 months down and only 9 to go!

The end of the year always feels far away and then all of a sudden we are looking up and wondering where the time went yet again.

Did you set a goal to start this year? If you didn’t how do you know if you are on pace? If you did set  your goal did you remember to set it big enough or did you let yourself off easy?

Take your goal and divide it by 4 because with the end of March comes the end of the 1st quarter. Now the important question to ask yourself is…Are you on pace to reach your goal?

You might be ahead of your pace with a fast start. Great work to not let the start of the year, the winter weather or the sickness that every other person seemed to get, slow you at all. A fast start allows for the chance to handle a bump in the road with more confidence.

If you are ahead of your pace, maybe you should reevaluate your goal, raise it and push harder this year.

No matter if you leave your goal where it is and plan to fly past it, or if you raise your goal for the remainder of this year, just remember to keep the pressure on and run with the momentum you are creating.momentum snowball

You might be right on target of your pace. This is a great place to be after the first quarter because getting started, even though you have the excitement, is often the hardest place to be. Now that you have created momentum and are moving forward don’t stop for anything.  Your goals are within reach and your year will be a success.

Of course there is always the third answer to the question of your goal and your pace. You might be behind your pace with a slow start to the year. Whatever got in your way, it is already behind you. Leave it there and move on! There is still time to get caught up and ahead. It is very rare that a team goes wire to wire (in first place from day 1 through the championship) and that means that you too can still move into first place on the race to your goals.

Leave it and move on

If an obstacle is still in your way, figure out what it is and the best way around it, over it, under it or even through it. If the obstacle seems overwhelming then it is time to figure out why you want your goal. If your why is big enough it will power you through anything. If your why isn’t pushing or pulling you to success, it is time to rethink why your goal is important and not just a number to achieve.

Don’t wait until the year is over to evaluate your progress. Don’t even wait for the year to be halfway over. Evaluate each quarter, each month, each week and even each day to be sure that you are on pace for your goals because you can and will achieve them if you monitor them.

REALationships

Anyone can go to a networking event and walk away with a stack of contacts. Anyone can attend a business function and meet new people. Anyone can fill a database with names. How many of you create REALationships though?

What do your relationships look like? Are they relationships or REALationships?

Friend RequestWould you say that you have a few really close friends and that is the limit of it?

Would you say that you have a lot of great friends?

Would you say that you have many Facebook friends?

RE is a prefix and listed at Dictionary.com as meaning; to return to a previous condition such as renew or retrace. It could also be indicating repetition of an action such as remarry

Are your relationships just a repetitive action that continues to return to a previous condition or are you creating REALationships?

When we search REAL at Dictionary.com we find that it means true, genuine and even can be defined as sincere. Another definition that comes with REAL is existing or occurring in the physical world. Again we ask you, are you developing REALationships with others?

A REALationship is one that grows. One that is true. One that is sincere. One that is not focused on what it can provide for you. One that is genuine. One you want to develop. A REALationship is one that is in the physical world, not just online.

It is important to have relationships in your life. These are the people who you know and yet don’t know. You know them from work and enough to ask about their kids, and that’s where it ends. These are the people who you contact when you are looking for sponsorship, helping your daughter sell Girl Scout cookies or looking to grow your business.

How do you create REALationships? You listen, you ask great questions, you come from contribution, you give to give and don’t give to get and you care about the other person. You lift your head up from a screen and give your attention.

Each of us can only have a handful of strong REALationships so make sure you give your time and effort to those that you want to help grow, assist and still learn from yourself. Remember that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with, so choose wisely.

Your REALationships are  the people you want to share with, celebrate with and mourn with. These are the people who reach out to you to sponsor you, buy your daughter’s Girl Scout cookies and are always thinking how they can help you grow your business.

REALationships will change in your life as people move, as people change and as people develop other REALationships that impact them. That means to keep it real you must work on it.

Networking done right

From BNI (Business Network International) to Young Professionals and all the networking groups in between there are best practices for networking.

If you are in a professional networking organization then you will have rules, such as 1 person from each profession, each person speaks a certain amount of time, etc…

What about those networking opportunities that are not part of a professional organization?

  • Attending a conventionnetworking
  • A local chamber event
  • A holiday party
  • A PTA meeting

If you are attending any of these opportunities and plan to use them as a networking event here are 4 tips to make the most of it.

1) Don’t just give everyone your card
There is nothing more annoying at an event than when you shove your card into everyone’s hand while they are engaged with someone else.

  • They never asked for your card.
  • They won’t remember why they have your card.
  • They will probably throw your card away, or even worse put you on their follow-up emails that you didn’t want in the first place.

2) Don’t just take everyone else’s card
The flip side of giving everyone your card is that you take everyone’s card and this is just as bad a practice.

  • Why did you take their card in the first place?
  • Do they really want the information you are about to send them or will they just click unsubscribe and hurt your online results.
  • Do you really want to have a business relationship with this person that you don’t know?

3) Have a plan in place in advance
When you go to a networking opportunity have a plan for who you want to meet and why you want to meet them.

  • Are you looking for people in a certain area of the country?
  • Are you looking for people with a specific skill set or experience?
  • Are you looking for people who fit a specific criteria that match yours?

4) Meet the people and remember the people.
This is the key to networking, are you memorable? This is what sets the best networkers apart from the others. After the event is over, even more if it is a convention over more than one day, most people will be on information overload and not remember much. When they get home and calm down, will they remember you? They will if you remember them!

  • Have conversation with the people you are networking with. It is better to network with fewer people and be remembered then to network with everyone in the room and be forgotten in seconds.
  • After your conversation with someone you should be able to make 3 notes about them on the back of their card (now you want their information) to use in future conversations and emails such as things you have in common.
  • Work at sharing an interesting fact about yourself that helps you stand out from the crowd of networkers.
  • Ask more questions and listen more than you talk. You will be remembered for being a great conversationalist.

You can network with everyone and get nothing from the experience or you can have an idea of whom you are looking for at the event, make a connection, be remembered and grow a business relationship with years of positive results.

The choice is yours.

7 ways to read more books in one year

The new year is upon us and many people make resolutions. Here’s hoping you did not as studies have shown us that most of them have sadly failed already.

Instead, during this year just make changes in your habits and your choices.

stack-of-books

One of the choices many people make at the start of the year is to read more. Reading is a great way to learn from the masters, escape on a vacation, solve a crime, improve your skills and focus your thoughts.

Here are some suggestions on how you can read more this year…

1)Read in the car.
We know that you shouldn’t text and drive, so you probably shouldn’t read and drive. What do we mean by this then? Listen to audiobooks when you are in the car.
The average person spends 25 minutes each way commuting each day. That means at least 1 chapter a day could be listened to. That means over the course of a month you could easily listen to 1 more book.

2)Read while working out.
Again, this is a hard one to do with an actual book while you run on the treadmill, lift weights or however you choose to work out. Once again then, plug-in to an audiobook and your cardio will pass by quicker and your weights won’t seem as heavy. A 30 minute workout means another handful of books over a year.

3)Read before bed daily.
Leave a book at your nightstand and read for  at least 10 minutes before you turn in for the night. If you are the person talking to this article right now and saying, “As soon as I lay down and read, I fall asleep” then don’t lay down in bed. Read in a chair, read sitting up, read in a different room.

4)Learn to speed read.

  • People that run fast seem to run more.
  • People that eat fast seem to eat more.
  • People that read faster seem to read more.

Sign up for a class to learn how to speed read. Even if you aren’t reading a page in 10 seconds, you will probably still read faster than you are now.

5)Leave a book in your bathroom.
We might not want to talk about this, and yet it is a room we visit in our home daily. Leave a book there, read 3 pages each time you are there. Before you know it, you will be hiding in your bathroom because you want to read more.

6)Carry a book with you.
You will end up waiting on someone daily. This might be the person making your drink at Starbucks, the appointment that is running late or on hold with the cable company. Have a book with you at all times and fill your wait, reading. Don’t want to carry a book everywhere you go? Use an app on your smart phone and carry hundreds!

7)Sign Up for Book Summaries
Some people might consider this cheating, although it is a fantastic way to get more information in less time. Let someone else read the book for you and share with you the 3-5 page review. This is just like using Cliff Notes in school. Nobody will know you didn’t read the full book as you will be able to explain all of the key points.

Using this suggestions and tips will have you reading more books this year. This will lead to the next challenge, how to remember all that you read.

Get a journal and write a ONE page review of each book when you are finished. At the end of the year, you will be able to review and read all of those books again in moments.

There is only one question left…what book will you read first?

E.F.G.

You may have heard the term A.B.C. at some point. Most people hear A.B.C. and they start to sing the alphabet song. To those in sales A.B.C. means something very different. Salespeople most likely hear the voice of Alec Baldwin as Blake in the movie Glengarry Glen Ross reminding the other salesmen in the room to Always Be Closing. Today it is finally time to move farther down in the alphabet and instead of always thinking closing, closing, closing, how about we focus on E.F.G. and how you Execute Future Goals.

aimhighMany people miss the opportunity to set goals because they feel they will be disappointed if they set them and don’t reach them. The disappointment comes from never attempting to achieve a goal, not in the missing the mark.

If you don’t set a goal how do you know where you are going?
How do you know what to reach for?
How do you know when to celebrate that you achieved what you were after?

Goals can be set at any time of the year. That can mean the 4th quarter so you are building momentum into the start of the calendar year. It can mean as the summer approaches so you can use the energy of the warmth as a way to power you to a quick start on the path to your goal. Basically, you can set goals whenever it makes sense to you and whenever you start a new objective.

Once you have a target, you can begin to Execute Future Goals.

Goal setting has no limits and can cover any area of your life. Your goals could include:

  • A business related sales goal.
  • A personal exercise goal such as to run a certain distance, or to lose a number of pounds,  or even to just exercise daily.
  • A relationship goal like spending more time with the kids, or having a date night with your spouse.
  • A goal can cover anything from writing a book, to opening a new company to hiking the Appalachian trail.

Before we help you E.F.G. we must make sure we set our goal. To work on setting a goal, ask yourself these questions:

  • What level did I reach this year?
  • Did I get to that level by accident or on purpose? There are times when we achieve targets without even focusing on them due to natural ability.
  • How much farther can I go or do I want to go?
  • What is the next logical level to reach?
  • When do I want to reach that next level?

Now that you have answer to these simple questions you will have an idea of where you have been, where you want to go and just how fast you can get there.

We believe that you should set your goal higher than you originally plan. We understand that you just felt that lump in your throat and we know how hard it can be. Push yourself! You might just be amazed at what you can do and will do!

“Aim for the moon, even if you miss you’ll land amongst the stars.”

One of the challenges that comes with setting a goal so far away is that to some, it is discouraging if they don’t achieve the level they were aiming to reach.  Here is the trick we use. Set your goal at the moon level. This is a far reaching goal and if everything goes perfectly it is something you will achieve. You should then set a challenge that is your atmosphere level. This would be a goal that is larger than what you have already been able to do and your minimum goal for next year. Now, celebrate when you break through the atmosphere level and keep going for the moon goal. You at least know you are now amongst the stars.

Setting your goal will be the easy part. If you really want to Execute Future Goals this next part will be the fuel you need for continued motivation.

  • Why am I wanting that goal?

This is a stand alone question. One that you MUST answer. Knowing why you are doing something will push you, pull you, motivate you and give you something to get you going even on days you want to hide in bed. Your why will be the cornerstone that brings everything together and holds it in place.

If it doesn’t make you cry, it isn’t a big enough why!

You should hurt inside if you disappoint your why. You should feel that you have let your why down. If your why is truly big enough to make you feel that way, it will be the fuel to your goals.

Your why can change. It might be something that is a lifelong goal, or it might be something that pushes you though a month. Whether it is long term or short term isn’t important, it just must be powerful enough to make you take action.

Now you have your big goal (the moon) and you have your on-the-way goal (the atmosphere) and you have your why (the power for your voyage) now find someone that has made that trip before you and follow their path.

Skip right over A.B.C. as you have now found a way to focus on E.F.G. and with a simple list of questions you will then be able to Execute Future Goals and celebrate heights you had once only dreamed about.Executer Future Goals

Start next year, tomorrow!

So you want Top 5 things to do to Start Next Year Tomorrow….

1)Look back to look forward

Review everything that you did in 2014. If you have no idea, then the first thing you need to do for your new year is set up a tracking system so you don’t repeat this challenge again next year.
What did you do this year that worked?
  • Did you have the best success with your sphere?
  • Was it from farming a neighborhood?
  • Was it a specific mailer that you sent monthly that brought you the best results?
What did you do this year that did not work?
  • Did you waste time sitting open houses that nobody showed up at?
  • Did you spend too much money on shopping cart advertising?
  • Did you take too much time playing on Facebook and saying it was work?

The better you know your successes and your challenges the better you can move forward.

2)Set a goal

Many people just start running the race. Set a goal for yourself for how many families you plan to help next year. Then take that another step. If you just think about it, it is a dream. If you write it down and make it an official goal you have a much better chance of achieving your target. Want an even better chance to hit your goal? Write it down and post it somewhere you see it daily. For an even better chance, write it, post it AND share it with someone who brings accountability to you.

Start Next Year Tomorrow

Don’t set your goal in dollar amounts or you will not give the attention to each transaction and opportunity equally. Set your goal on families helped and focus on the people. The other stuff will fall into place.

3)Create your plan

Now that you know what worked, what didn’t work and your goal for the year, let’s bring it all together. How will you take the answers from Step 1 to reach, and exceed, Step 2?
Work backwards for this answer.
If you know that you find a family to help for every 20 people who walk in your open house, how many people do you need to visit open houses? Then you can figure out how many open houses you will need to host or focus on how to get more people in each one.
If you know that you generate many internet visitors with your blogs, your pay-per-click advertising and your email blasts then break that down to figure how many blogs you must write, how many ads you must run and how many emails you should be blasting.

Once you have your answers in each area you know brings you great results, you will know the simple thing that you must focus on to reach more families to assist.

4)Add something new

What is missing from your list of things that work and didn’t work for you? Now is time to get uncomfortable and add something different. This will help you focus as it is not something that is habit to you at this time. The focus you find from this new source of lead generation will help you push through all avenues you are working. This might become your new best form of business leads.

5)Get help!

You can only do so much on your own. Start looking for help in many areas.
  • That could be kids to hand deliver a flyer or place door hangers.
  • It might be another agent to work side by side and challenge each other and hold each other accountable.
  • Your help might be someone who loves the details and paperwork that you shouldn’t be focused on, or maybe someone who has a great eye for creating those email blasts
We all need help somewhere. Whatever the area you need help in, figure that out and find the match for you.

Set that goal and remember…‘Always aim for the Moon, even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.’ ― W. Clement Stone

If you put these 5 steps into play, you can start next year, tomorrow and 2015 will be a year to celebrate.

TOAST them or you’re toast!

There is a limited number of relationships that each of us can maintain at any one time. The most well known research on this topic was done by Robin Dunbar who states, “humans can only comfortably maintain 150 stable relationships.” He goes on to say that this 150 is “the number of people one knows and keeps social contact with.”

What happens when you meet someone or have a relationship with someone and want to make sure that you keep social contact with them? You have to work at it.

Relationships take work!

You must T.O.A.S.T. your relationships, otherwise your relationships are toast!

burnt toastFor those of you that don’t know the expression, “you’re toast” it is a phrase used to indicate that someone is in big trouble. In this case, your relationships!

While you might be able to have in the area of 150 relationships, you should figure your 30-40 key relationships in your life, both personal and professional (yes that means your spouse, your children, your parents, as well as your boss, co-workers and clients)
If you can remember to take the time to toast each relationship it will be that much easier to strengthen your key relationships.

T = Talk to them.

This means that you must pick up the phone and call them or even better get face to face and spend a little time with them. This doesn’t matter if it is family, a co-worker, or a client that you value. Check in and spend a little time catching up.
What to say when you are talking to them?
O = Offer
A = Assistance
Don’t worry about asking them to help you, instead make the focus of your call about how you can offer assistance to them! They will return the favor again and again as you continue to strengthen the relationship
S = Send them something
See an interesting article online? Email it to them and let them know. Read something in a magazine that they might enjoy reading, send it to them. Find a comic in the Sunday paper (we know you flip to the comics first) that makes you laugh, cut it out and mail it to them. Make sure they continue to get things from you.
T = Text them
In today’s society almost everyone texts. It is an easy way for communication. Start the day with a simple text to wish them a great day. Send off a text to share something that happened. Did you see them post something on Facebook that really caught your attention? Don’t just comment on Facebook, take it a step farther and text them as well.  Just don’t text and drive!
If you can’t remember each month to T.O.A.S.T. your relationships, then they will fall apart and your relationships will be toast.
Take a moment, raise a glass, or in this case a phone, and toast your key relationships and watch them strengthen!

Overnight Success, or is it?

Success can be yours and it can be easier than you think to achieve it.

The biggest challenge that we have found people face when they are looking to become an overnight success is that they want it to actually happen overnight. There is no such thing as an overnight success. There is always work that must be done.

  • Overnight SuccessThe star athlete that comes out of nowhere probably put hours and hours of training in before you ever heard their name
  • The movie star that was discovered has probably been in acting classes at school or has some small parts on their resume
  • The business person that takes their idea to success, probably has had many jobs helping them get where they are overnight

The overnight success is rarely what it seems.

To achieve success, which you can, all you need to do is find the person a few steps ahead of you and follow them.

Most people are happy to have someone following them, as it pushes them to be better and makes them feel good to share. These same people will be happy for you as you continue to grow, even if that means passing them by. Remember, your level of success might not be the same as their level of success.

Here is an easy way to understand this concept…

Having grown up in a city that experienced snow 10 months of the year, or so it seemed, and never had a snow day from school we learned how to walk to the bus in knee-deep snow. We followed in the footsteps created by the person in front of us even if we couldn’t see them. Once we finally caught up to them, because it was easier for us then it was for them, we passed them and let them follow in our footsteps. If we were smart, we just looked for the next set of footprints to walk in and repeated the pattern.

This is how you create overnight success:

  1. Look for the person heading the same direction as you
  2. Follow in their footsteps until you catch up
  3. Pass them
  4. Find the next person heading in the direction you are now intending to go

Before you know it, you are an overnight success story and there is a line of people walking in your footsteps.

CIRCLE Growth

There is always time to improve your relationships in life.

It doesn’t matter if you are in a sales business, run an office, or even are a teacher in a classroom, C.I.R.C.L.E. growth can be yours easily and you will be able to see an increase in your relationships.

When asked, people will usually overstate the depth of a connection they have with others in their life. This doesn’t matter if they are personal or business associations. We, as people, believe that other people will remember us, that they are thinking about us and will be there for us as needed. This statement is even more prominent in the sales world as commissioned sales people believe they have a huge database of people who are always thinking about them.

Sadly this is not true!

Facebook might allow us to have 5000 Friends and while that sounds wonderful, it is a lie. The truth is we should probably change the words a little and have 5000 acquaintances on Facebook. According to studies done by Robin Dunbar and by Bernard–Killworth we see that the average person can have between 100-300 true relationships at any one time. Having a large database is wonderful as long as you remember that without at least quarterly contact, face-to-face or speaking over the phone, you shouldn’t count on those people. Meaning your database can hold many names, only the number that you can speak to each quarter should be counted as true contacts.

Some people have 100 relationships in their lives and would still only name 50 of them if they had to think about it as they stay in a very small circle. At the same time others believe they have thousands of relationships and none of those people would even know who they are. Having a database full of names or a full Facebook account doesn’t mean you have a relationship.

This is where C.I.R.C.L.E. growth comes into play.

Notice a trend? TALK about them and don’t ask about or for business. Check out their Facebook page or look in your notes and have something personal to call them about.

  • Did they go on a vacation?
  • Did they celebrate something special?
  • Did they buy something new?
