Here We Go Again

Doesn’t it feel like just yesterday we were saying it was too hot as the summer beat down on us? Maybe it was a week ago that we were excited to see the flowers blooming as Spring started? It couldn’t have been that long ago that we just celebrated the new year and yet here it is again. Before we know it, this new year ahead of us will have come and gone.

What can we do differently this time to make the next year even better than this one? Review it!

Review Most of the time we just press forward thinking that we can and should do the same things we have been doing and this time just do them better. That is rarely the case. If you could just do those things better wouldn’t you have already done that?

Before this year comes to an end go take an hour, a morning, a day and review this past year. Ask yourself some tough questions about the year.

Where did you spend your time?
Were you in your office space or were you elsewhere? Were you on Facebook or other websites too often? Were you with clients enough?
If you can figure out where you were, you can figure out where you should and shouldn’t be in the new year!

What did you do that worked and what did you do that did not work?
There were some events you hosted or attended that did great. There were some that in review were a clear waste of your time. There were some weeks that were extra successful and some weeks that you should have just stayed in bed.
What made these events work or these weeks so great? What was it that made you wish you could run and hide?

Who did you spend your time with and who should you have spent your time with?
Jim Rohn taught us that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Who was that for you this year? Did you choose wisely? Who do you wish you had spent more time with so you could grow into the person you want to be?

They tell us that history is doomed to repeat itself. The same is true for us as well because we are doomed to repeat ourselves unless we learn the lessons and make the changes that allow us to breakthrough and grow!

Take the time to review your year and learn from it. You deserve it!

Lead with revenue even through the holidays

From decorations in the stores to the red cups at Starbucks and everything pumpkin spiced, we know that holiday season is here. The holidays bring so many emotions from joy to happiness to a childlike glee and yes, sadly to stress.

What brings the stress the most? The financial commitment that the holidays can become. From travel to gifts to donations to more gifts to tables full of food and to even more gifts it is easy to turn a wonderful time into one that brings worry.

We have been hearing the lesson of LEAD WITH REVENUE for years in the business world and it should also apply to our personal world!

With many of us putting together our annual budget for next year it is time to stop and think about all of those business expenses that we do not need to have. Time to stop and think about where we are going to put our money next year. Then, making sure we have the income to exceed the expenses so we end the year with profit!

Lead with revenue is not just a business concept and we can use this powerful lesson to make the most of our personal life as well.

Here is what we have learned to do. We have a jar that we fill following a schedule all year-long. On week 1 we put $1 in the jar. On week 2 we put $2 in the jar, and so on and so on. On week 36 we put $36 in the jar and by now we are sure you have figured the pattern. By the end of the year you will end up with $1378 in the jar. We add a little extra by emptying our pockets of coins into the jar and by the end of the year are in the area of $1500. Now, we take that money, divide it up and have our holiday budget to shop for friends, family, charity and ourselves. No stress, no credit card bills and nobody attempting to out shop anyone else.

This same pattern can be used in your business world as well as you add money to an account once a week or with every check you receive. Build up this account with a target to pay for needed training or a tool you need to add to the business or coaching for  yourself and then you too can lead with revenue and not with hope and stress!

Here’s to a happy holiday season and to a revenue filled year for each of you!

Are you unique?

From Facebook to Twitter to Friendster to Instagram to MySpace to SnapChat to YouTube and this list can continue to go on and on and on…

Some of these social media sites have vanished while others have taken over the way we communicate and have experiences. What makes one a huge success and one a failure?

  • It has nothing to do with photos versus videos.
  • It has nothing to do with the age of user or when it was launched.
  • It has nothing to with the limited characters or #hashtags.

Well then, what does make the difference? The difference is found in the Unique Value Proposition that each of the products offer.

That is the same thing that helps make YOU different from everyone else.

Have you created your very own Unique Value Proposition (UVP) to share with your potential clients?

Here are some tips on putting together your very own UVP:

  1. Start by figuring out what makes you different from everyone else.
    Is there something in your career history that makes you unique and the best person for your client? Maybe it is something in your experiences that makes you unique? We all have something that makes us the best choice.
  2. Can you prove whatever makes you unique?
    Being honest might be unique, sadly, although it cannot be proven until after the fact. Being someone that will follow up regularly is great, although it cannot be proven until you have followed up. Make sure your unique traits can be proven, such as you have sold a certain number of homes in the past or maybe you have created special marketing that stood out and got the deal done. Make sure you can prove it.
  3. Make sure whatever makes you unique is not just another way to put others down. Be the person that shows off your best side, not proves you are the best match because you pull others down.

Do not attempt to create a Unique Value proposition and then grow into it. Instead, create your Unique Value Proposition from what makes you unique and continue to change it as you and your business grow.

In Like a Lion…

Maybe you have heard the saying “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb?”

What does that saying mean? The official answer, it is referring to the weather and how March usually starts cold and windy and ends with spring all around us as the weather gets warmer.

One thing that I hope is that this saying never applies to you. This saying should never apply to your business life or your personal life. Please do not let a month come in like a lion and go out like a lamb. Instead let’s always be working to make sure that your month starts with a roar of a lion and ends up as a pride. For those wondering a pride is a group of lions.

  • If your month starts strong, keep going and build on it.
  • If your month starts average, then step it up.
  • If you month starts with a whimper just remember that at anytime with some effort you can turn that whimper into a big ROAR!

Stop for a moment and imagine what your business, your relationships, your bank account, your whole life could look like, if each month was a slightly louder roar then the month before. (This is where you stop and imagine before returning to read more…just be sure to come back and finish reading)

It doesn’t take a lot to raise the volume of your roar. Check off these 5 simple things each day:

  1. Make 1 more sales call or customer follow up call before you leave work for the day. You will walk out feeling like you did your job and now and then you will walk out with an additional success.
  2. Send a thank you text before during the day to 2 people that you are grateful for from that day. You will see more happiness around you, you will be bringing happiness to other people and you will fill yourself with more happiness.
  3.  Help 3 people a day. These can be things such as holding a door, to buying coffee for the person behind you in line, to things like helping someone move. Do these things without looking for something in return and you will get something in return!
  4.  Take a moment each day and remember what you are doing it all 4. OK we know we reached with the for/4 thing, just go with it. Without knowing your purpose and remembering your purpose you will get derailed.
  5. Read 5 pages of something that will help you grow. One must always be continuing to learn to develop a larger roar!

These activities will keep you working a little harder, thinking a little bigger and becoming a better person. Do these simple steps as a part of your daily activities and your roar will continue to grow and grow until everyone can hear it!

Welcome to the Hall of Fame

I have been blessed to be able to visit the College Football Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Hockey Hall of Fame and of course in my opinion the hall of all halls…the Baseball Hall of Fame.

One thing is very clear when you enter a Hall of Fame, only the best of the best get to find a space to call their own. As of this year the Pro Football hall of fame only has 295 members and with over a century of baseball and thousands of players only 310 players, coaches and umpires have been elected.

The best of the best all had a few things in common.

1)Dedication
Top athletes don’t just wake up one day and find that they have been blessed with their arm being turned into a thunderbolt. They have dedication to what it is they are looking to master. They work at it again and again. On days where they really want to stay in bed and hide under the sheets, they get up and do it anyway!
Jerry Rice, one of the greatest wide receivers ever (that is a discussion for another time) even in practice always finished each play with a run into the end zone. In the off-season, he worked out 6 days a week in a famous workout that was just called “The Hill” and other athletes would attempt his workout and fail.
Jerry Rice had dedication. Athletes that make the Hall of Fame have dedication. Do you have dedication?

2)Determination
Hall of Famers don’t give up, they are determined to achieve their goal and will do what they have to so they can.
There were days that Cal Ripken Jr was hurt and had slight injuries and his determination found him in each game for 2,632 consecutive games (that is 16 seasons without missing a game)
How important are your goals to you and do you have the determination to achieve them?

3)Results

Those athletes that get honored in the Hall of Fame had results from what they did. They didn’t just show up and go through the motions and believe they should be honored. They worked for it and they produced! More importantly they produced when it mattered most.
Reggie Jackson was nicknamed “Mr October” for the way he produced in the clutch time of the baseball season. Joe Montana was knows as “Joe Cool” and lead 31 fourth-quarter comebacks and brought results when they were needed.
Do you create positive results from your activities and do you deliver in the clutch?

The different Hall of Fame locations are places to visit, to imagine what could be and to be reminded of what it takes to earn a space to call your own.

There might not be a Hall of Fame in your industry and that shouldn’t stop you from being remembered as one of the best and earning a spot forever in the hearts of others.

Halloween, the scariest of days

For years now Halloween has been the scariest day of the year in my opinion. What is it that makes it so scary?

  • pumpkinIt isn’t the adorable kids dressed as spooky ghosts and other things that go bump in the night.
  • It isn’t the calories waiting to get us in the bag of goodies that our children bring home and we raid while they sleep.
  • It isn’t the giant spider decorations people put on their homes. (ok this one might scare me, although it isn’t the main reason)

The thing that scares me the most about Halloween is that it is the beginning of the holiday season. In other words, it is the beginning of the end for many independent contractors.

As most people celebrate Halloween and flip the calendar to November they unconsciously begin the act of unplugging for the rest of the year.

First, there is the long weekend to launch November as we celebrate our Veterans. Now let’s be very clear, our Veterans deserve to be celebrated daily not just once. The point is that with this day comes a day away from work and aids in the holiday mindset. The fact that it is on a Wednesday this year it now has the chance to mess up a full week of focus.

Next there is the 4 day weekend that Thanksgiving has become. 4 days might not be enough for some of you that make it a full week break and maybe longer if you work some travel in there.

Next thing you know you change the calendar and all of a sudden it is December. Before we know it the kids get out of school again and the rest of the holidays show up and rush past us.

And then the biggest holiday of them all…New Years Eve. Time to finally flip the switch back on. Here is some advance warning…please skip New Years Resolutions this year and just create good habits instead.

Remember, as Halloween approaches and the year rushes to a close ask yourself these questions:

  • If you were running a race, wouldn’t you push harder and sprint as the finish line got closer? Then why do we let up with the final days of the year ahead of us?
  • If you had to climb a mountain, wouldn’t it be a nice bonus if you could start at least halfway up? That is what finishing strong will do for the start of the next year for you.

Look around the stores you visit, notice anything? That’s right, they skipped Halloween and Thanksgiving and the Christmas decorations are up already. To them, the year is over. How about to you?

Stupid or Smart…You Choose

“It takes no more hours in a day to be smart than it does to be stupid!” – Gary Keller

 

This sounds like something my dad would have said to me, and that is just the way that Gary speaks to anyone smart enough to listen!

 

While Gary was hitting us with this powerful statement at Keller William’s Mega Camp, what does this really mean?

 

It means that YOU get the choice of how you spend each moment of your life. Even when it feels like you don’t have that choice, you still have it! You can choose the positive outlook in a negative situation just as easily as you can choose to have a negative outlook in a positive situation. *Editorial note – Why would you do the latter?

 

It is up to you to fill your calendar with activities that help you continue to grow smarter instead of leading you down the path of stupid.

 

Are you filling your calendar with powerful growth opportunities such as:
  • Masterminding and Networking with SMART people
  • Goal setting for a BIGGER life
  • Reading for personal GROWTH
  • Focusing on growing your ONE thing to becoming a leader in your industry
Or are you choosing to fill your calendar with lesser choices such as:
  • Watching your favorite soap opera
  • Eating at unhealthy restaurants
  • Sitting around with no purpose or plan and just watching grass grow (another saying my dad always enjoyed to use)
Now, we are not saying that some of those things don’t bring value to your life. Sometimes we all need to unplug and there is nothing better than getting lost in a movie or a show. The real question is how much time do you need for unplugging and how much time are you taking for unplugging?

 

Are you finding your calendar filled by others and letting them choose what to put on there? Then you can only hope you are surrounded by people filling your calendar with smart time.

 

The only thing worse that having stupid time on your calendar is not even filling in a calendar to follow. If you don’t fill in a calendar, how will you know what you NEED to do instead of what you think you should do? When presented with that choice we always choose the easy way out.

 

White SpaceYOU get to choose if your activities and situations are making you smarter or not. Remember that your calendar is your true boss. Make sure you get your goals to show up by the activities on your calendar and then each day remember to ask your calendar what you should be doing. Then, do THAT!

 

Time block well as you get to choose if those minutes, hours and days are going to be helping you become “more stupid” or smarter.
