Look in the mirror!

Isn’t it interesting how your reticular activating system can really kick in on certain things.

  • Maybe you are looking at buying a car, and you start to see the type of car you are thinking about purchasing everywhere.
  • Maybe you are about to get married and all of a sudden it seems like everyone around you is getting married.
  • Maybe you hear an amazing piece of advice and it keeps showing up everywhere you look.

I found myself in just that situation recently and I wanted to share this advice that kept popping up in my world with each of you.

LOOK IN THE MIRROR!mirror

There are many reasons to look in the mirror and the first reason came from my mother. If your home life was anything like mine, each morning you were reminded to look in the mirror before you left the house. Of course in my home the reminding sounded a little more like, “did you even look at yourself in the mirror?”

Yes, it matters how we present ourselves.

mirror competitionThe second reason to look into a mirror is to beat the best competitor you will ever face (in anything) and that is yourself! Have you noticed how gyms have mirrors everywhere? It is not to make the location look bigger. It is to have you watching your competition, yourself. Personal trainers will tell you again and again that the only competitor that can truly beat you is staring back at you in that mirror!
If you want to be your best, beat the person staring back at you.

mirror self reflectionThe third reason I share with you today is one that Gary Keller reminded many recently and that is “if you want to find someone to blame, just look in the mirror.” This is usually the last place we want to look even though it should be the first.
Before you blame others, figure out where something went wrong and what you can learn from the experience.

Have a Masters Mindset

For one weekend every year the eyes of the sporting world are looking at Augusta, Georgia. This year was no different and it is one that will be remembered thanks to a little history made at The Masters. Here’s the best part, you can decide which way you will remember this weekend.
Here’s what happened…
masters-logoJordan Spieth collapsed on the 12th hole of the final round of the Masters. He only had 8 holes left in the biggest golf tournament. He had a 5 stroke lead and looked like there was nothing that was going to stop him from winning the event. Jordan, at 22 years of age, is the defending champion and would have become only the 4th golfer to win in back to back years. If he held on to win the sports world would have been asking if he was the next Tiger, the next (Jack) Nicklaus and one of the greatest to play the game of golf. Sadly, this conversation did not occur.
Instead Jordan Spieth got ready to tee off at the 12th hole, a par 3, and after finding the water twice, and a bunker once, he ended the hole with a 7 (4 over par) and he never recovered.
Meanwhile, Danny Willett an excellent golfer in his own right, ranked just outside of the top #10 in the world and someone who most people could not pick out of a line-up took the lead and won the tournament and the coveted green jacket.
Now imagine how that could be you. Things are working well for you. You are having success at work and things almost feel too easy. Everything is moving along and all cylinders are clicking. Then all of a sudden you have a bad day. This bad day could be caused by something outside of work, or maybe it is work related. How do we keep moving forward so we don’t have a collapse that puts an end to an amazing week, month or even year? How do we make sure that we can get back up and are able to get back on top?
It is all about having the right mindset! This is the main focus of The ONE Thing Workshop. Oh and while all of that was happening the Golden State Warriors tied the Chicago Bulls with their 72 win of the NBA season and a chance to set a new record at 73 wins, something that has never been done before.
Don’t forget that while many things can distract us and pull our focus, there is always the chance that someone is coming out of what seems to be nowhere to set records behind you!

Chadalyst – When you are on a plane the Flight Attendant instructs you to put your oxygen mask on first in case of emergency. That way you take care of yourself before you attempt to take care of others and can be the most helpful. Take a moment and figure out what it is that gives you a positive mindset. Is it a walk in the woods? Some quiet time with a book? Is it a great meal that you prepare, and then get to enjoy eating? Whatever it is be sure to know it and when you are feeling down and out, go recharge your mindset!

In Like a Lion…

Maybe you have heard the saying “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb?”

What does that saying mean? The official answer, it is referring to the weather and how March usually starts cold and windy and ends with spring all around us as the weather gets warmer.

One thing that I hope is that this saying never applies to you. This saying should never apply to your business life or your personal life. Please do not let a month come in like a lion and go out like a lamb. Instead let’s always be working to make sure that your month starts with a roar of a lion and ends up as a pride. For those wondering a pride is a group of lions.

  • If your month starts strong, keep going and build on it.
  • If your month starts average, then step it up.
  • If you month starts with a whimper just remember that at anytime with some effort you can turn that whimper into a big ROAR!

Stop for a moment and imagine what your business, your relationships, your bank account, your whole life could look like, if each month was a slightly louder roar then the month before. (This is where you stop and imagine before returning to read more…just be sure to come back and finish reading)

It doesn’t take a lot to raise the volume of your roar. Check off these 5 simple things each day:

  1. Make 1 more sales call or customer follow up call before you leave work for the day. You will walk out feeling like you did your job and now and then you will walk out with an additional success.
  2. Send a thank you text before during the day to 2 people that you are grateful for from that day. You will see more happiness around you, you will be bringing happiness to other people and you will fill yourself with more happiness.
  3.  Help 3 people a day. These can be things such as holding a door, to buying coffee for the person behind you in line, to things like helping someone move. Do these things without looking for something in return and you will get something in return!
  4.  Take a moment each day and remember what you are doing it all 4. OK we know we reached with the for/4 thing, just go with it. Without knowing your purpose and remembering your purpose you will get derailed.
  5. Read 5 pages of something that will help you grow. One must always be continuing to learn to develop a larger roar!

These activities will keep you working a little harder, thinking a little bigger and becoming a better person. Do these simple steps as a part of your daily activities and your roar will continue to grow and grow until everyone can hear it!

Keep the spirit alive!

The holidays are over and it’s time to get back to “it”. Whatever “it” is for you.

It is time to set new goals for the new year and get focused. It is time to be all about business once again…or is it?

Why can’t the holiday spirit continue all year long? Why can’t we benefit from that energy that we are surrounded with, without the hefty price tag the holidays can sometimes bring?

Imagine the difference in your life if you could find yourself whistling a Christmas carol in April as you dealt with taxes, in August as the heat was making you crave the winter months or even as the kids return to school (isn’t that like a holiday for adults anyway?)

The holiday spirit is not something found in a store, under a tree or wrapped in any size package. The holiday spirit is your mindset and you can change that whenever you desire.

Did you notice between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve that people seem to have a little more patience with each other? Were you more patient this past holiday season?

Did you notice that people smiled more often and offered greetings to people they passed with the holiday energy in the air? Did you find that you were smiling more?

How can you keep the holiday spirit with you all year?

  • Remember to say hello and thank you to those around you.
  • Give small gifts to those that matter.
  • Make some time to help someone in need.
  • Spend a few extra moments with family in person or with video or a call.

The holiday season energy could be just the thing to power you through the tougher times of this year.

The holiday season is just an excuse to be nice, and that is one excuse we don’t need. Be nice all year long and you will be amazed with the results

What is a leader?

There I was sitting in a room with people with the title of leader. These leaders are getting ready to work with others that also have a title of leader. This made me ask the question, what makes a leader?

  • Is a leader someone who helps others figure out what to do or figures out what to do and let others witness it?
    Is a leader someone who goes first or goes last?
    Is a leader someone who tells others things or listens to others about things?

The answer to these questions is a simple one…yes.

A leader helps others figure the path and leads by example.
A leader sometimes pulls in the right direction and leads the way and other times pushes in the right direction and follows others.
A leader has answers and is always finding new answers.

Still confused? Here it is summed up in 3 simple points of what a leader does.vision

  1. Set a vision
  2. Clearly communicate that vision consistently
  3. Recruit a team to that vision

1. Set a vision – a leader should have an idea of where they currently are and where they want to go.

2. Communicate that vision – a leader should be able to share the destination with others so they want to go there as well.

3. Recruit a team – through communication a leader should be able to find others that see the same vision, hear the same vision and want to join on the journey to the final vision.

Some visions need a large team to achieve. Then there are some visions the only person you need to recruit is the one looking at you in the mirror!

You might not be a leader in title. That shouldn’t stop you from leading. In the different areas of life, we can all be leaders.

  • Maybe you are a leader in the business world.
  • Maybe you are a leader in your health choices.
  • Maybe you are a leader in the way you parent or the type of spouse you are.

The hardest person to lead is yourself so remember that YOU are a Leader and start there!

Welcome to the Hall of Fame

I have been blessed to be able to visit the College Football Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Hockey Hall of Fame and of course in my opinion the hall of all halls…the Baseball Hall of Fame.

One thing is very clear when you enter a Hall of Fame, only the best of the best get to find a space to call their own. As of this year the Pro Football hall of fame only has 295 members and with over a century of baseball and thousands of players only 310 players, coaches and umpires have been elected.

The best of the best all had a few things in common.

1)Dedication
Top athletes don’t just wake up one day and find that they have been blessed with their arm being turned into a thunderbolt. They have dedication to what it is they are looking to master. They work at it again and again. On days where they really want to stay in bed and hide under the sheets, they get up and do it anyway!
Jerry Rice, one of the greatest wide receivers ever (that is a discussion for another time) even in practice always finished each play with a run into the end zone. In the off-season, he worked out 6 days a week in a famous workout that was just called “The Hill” and other athletes would attempt his workout and fail.
Jerry Rice had dedication. Athletes that make the Hall of Fame have dedication. Do you have dedication?

2)Determination
Hall of Famers don’t give up, they are determined to achieve their goal and will do what they have to so they can.
There were days that Cal Ripken Jr was hurt and had slight injuries and his determination found him in each game for 2,632 consecutive games (that is 16 seasons without missing a game)
How important are your goals to you and do you have the determination to achieve them?

3)Results

Those athletes that get honored in the Hall of Fame had results from what they did. They didn’t just show up and go through the motions and believe they should be honored. They worked for it and they produced! More importantly they produced when it mattered most.
Reggie Jackson was nicknamed “Mr October” for the way he produced in the clutch time of the baseball season. Joe Montana was knows as “Joe Cool” and lead 31 fourth-quarter comebacks and brought results when they were needed.
Do you create positive results from your activities and do you deliver in the clutch?

The different Hall of Fame locations are places to visit, to imagine what could be and to be reminded of what it takes to earn a space to call your own.

There might not be a Hall of Fame in your industry and that shouldn’t stop you from being remembered as one of the best and earning a spot forever in the hearts of others.

Halloween, the scariest of days

For years now Halloween has been the scariest day of the year in my opinion. What is it that makes it so scary?

  • pumpkinIt isn’t the adorable kids dressed as spooky ghosts and other things that go bump in the night.
  • It isn’t the calories waiting to get us in the bag of goodies that our children bring home and we raid while they sleep.
  • It isn’t the giant spider decorations people put on their homes. (ok this one might scare me, although it isn’t the main reason)

The thing that scares me the most about Halloween is that it is the beginning of the holiday season. In other words, it is the beginning of the end for many independent contractors.

As most people celebrate Halloween and flip the calendar to November they unconsciously begin the act of unplugging for the rest of the year.

First, there is the long weekend to launch November as we celebrate our Veterans. Now let’s be very clear, our Veterans deserve to be celebrated daily not just once. The point is that with this day comes a day away from work and aids in the holiday mindset. The fact that it is on a Wednesday this year it now has the chance to mess up a full week of focus.

Next there is the 4 day weekend that Thanksgiving has become. 4 days might not be enough for some of you that make it a full week break and maybe longer if you work some travel in there.

Next thing you know you change the calendar and all of a sudden it is December. Before we know it the kids get out of school again and the rest of the holidays show up and rush past us.

And then the biggest holiday of them all…New Years Eve. Time to finally flip the switch back on. Here is some advance warning…please skip New Years Resolutions this year and just create good habits instead.

Remember, as Halloween approaches and the year rushes to a close ask yourself these questions:

  • If you were running a race, wouldn’t you push harder and sprint as the finish line got closer? Then why do we let up with the final days of the year ahead of us?
  • If you had to climb a mountain, wouldn’t it be a nice bonus if you could start at least halfway up? That is what finishing strong will do for the start of the next year for you.

Look around the stores you visit, notice anything? That’s right, they skipped Halloween and Thanksgiving and the Christmas decorations are up already. To them, the year is over. How about to you?

Stupid or Smart…You Choose

“It takes no more hours in a day to be smart than it does to be stupid!” – Gary Keller

 

This sounds like something my dad would have said to me, and that is just the way that Gary speaks to anyone smart enough to listen!

 

While Gary was hitting us with this powerful statement at Keller William’s Mega Camp, what does this really mean?

 

It means that YOU get the choice of how you spend each moment of your life. Even when it feels like you don’t have that choice, you still have it! You can choose the positive outlook in a negative situation just as easily as you can choose to have a negative outlook in a positive situation. *Editorial note – Why would you do the latter?

 

It is up to you to fill your calendar with activities that help you continue to grow smarter instead of leading you down the path of stupid.

 

Are you filling your calendar with powerful growth opportunities such as:
  • Masterminding and Networking with SMART people
  • Goal setting for a BIGGER life
  • Reading for personal GROWTH
  • Focusing on growing your ONE thing to becoming a leader in your industry
Or are you choosing to fill your calendar with lesser choices such as:
  • Watching your favorite soap opera
  • Eating at unhealthy restaurants
  • Sitting around with no purpose or plan and just watching grass grow (another saying my dad always enjoyed to use)
Now, we are not saying that some of those things don’t bring value to your life. Sometimes we all need to unplug and there is nothing better than getting lost in a movie or a show. The real question is how much time do you need for unplugging and how much time are you taking for unplugging?

 

Are you finding your calendar filled by others and letting them choose what to put on there? Then you can only hope you are surrounded by people filling your calendar with smart time.

 

The only thing worse that having stupid time on your calendar is not even filling in a calendar to follow. If you don’t fill in a calendar, how will you know what you NEED to do instead of what you think you should do? When presented with that choice we always choose the easy way out.

 

White SpaceYOU get to choose if your activities and situations are making you smarter or not. Remember that your calendar is your true boss. Make sure you get your goals to show up by the activities on your calendar and then each day remember to ask your calendar what you should be doing. Then, do THAT!

 

Time block well as you get to choose if those minutes, hours and days are going to be helping you become “more stupid” or smarter.

It’s NOT one thing

Many of us hear something, then we latch on to it, and then we run with it. Have you ever stopped to wonder if what you heard was accurate?

  • How many times have you heard “it” incorrectly, like a game of broken telephone?
  • Have you ever heard “it” just how you wanted to hear it?
  • Do you believe that you might have heard “it” in a way that is slanted by the person telling it to us?

Have you read the best seller, The ONE Thing? Did you take that to mean ONLY one thing?

That is a thought that can be overwhelming! That will cause paralysis in most people before they are able to move forward. How can ONE thing sum up everything in your life? Simple, it can’t.

It isn’t ONE thing, it’s ONE THING AT A TIME!

The book shows us that there are 7 areas of our lives to focus on. Even though we understand and accept this, we will still attempt to find one thing to fit them all. The 7 areas of focus are:

  1. Spiritual Life7 areas of focus
  2. Physical Health
  3. Personal Life
  4. Key Relationships
  5. Job
  6. Business
  7. Finances

Within these areas we have our ONE thing for each and again, it is one thing at a time.

Maybe your ONE thing with your job is being focused on lead generation. Once that is complete you move on to your job’s next one thing. This might be customer follow up, it might be your website development or maybe it is to meet with a client. Whatever it is, that is what you do next and with the same focus.

Maybe your one thing is to have dinner with the family. If that is what is important for your Key Relationships, then be at the table and be present working on that ONE thing. After dinner you can go check your email, the scores or whatever you just had to check on your phone. Then move to your next one thing with a key relationship. That might be a walk with your spouse, or working on a puzzle with your kids or even some alone time with a book as you change your focus to your Personal Life. You are the only one that can choose what your one thing should be.

While doing whatever it is, be there and be focused on that ONE thing! Once you are finished, then, and only then move on to your NEXT one thing and remember it is ONE THING AT A TIME!

3 Life Lessons in 1 minute

The great news is this posting has 3 powerful life lessons found within it. The not as great news is that it will take longer than 1 minute to read. The 1 minute in the title refers to the amount of time it took to experience and learn these lessons.

OTFThere I was working out at Orangetheory Fitness for a 5am session and feeling pretty good. It was an endurance day and our trainer for the morning, Jay, had me on the treadmill to start.

Jay would push all of us on the treadmills to a 3 minute block at a pace that was uncomfortable and then reward us with a break at a pace that was more comfortable. He continued this cycle with the reward times getting shorter and shorter.

After 15 minutes it was time to finish this block of running and Jay asked for us to give him 1 minute at our best possible speed and finish strong.

For those of you that know me outside of just reading my postings you know that I am determined and competitive. That being said I cranked the treadmill to the best speed I have ever run at and began my 1 minute ALL OUT!

30 seconds into my sprint I realized that I bit off more than I could chew, as my dad would have told me, and I had to jump off the racing belt of the treadmill as I was unable to continue.

It was at that moment that our trainer Jay leapt onto the back of my treadmill and began to encourage (yell) at me. He told me to get back on that treadmill and not to stop for anything. He told me to stop looking at the clock and just run until he told me I could stop. He told me there was nothing I couldn’t achieve if I put my head down and just ran!

And then finally Jay let all of us that were on the treadmills slow down and walk it out.

In that  minute, to be fair it was in the minutes after when I could reevaluate what had just happened, that I found these 3 powerful life lessons that will change me forever. I hope they help you without the need to go for a run.

1)We all need help to grow

Many of us believe we can do anything on our own. We don’t need help from others. Many of us are right, to a limit. Some of us have strong natural abilities in certain areas of life. Some of us are very entrepreneurial. When we become purposeful and we have someone to push us, someone hold us accountable or someone to care enough about us to tell us what we don’t always want to hear we can achieve breakthroughs and accomplish greater heights than we ever believed. In The ONE Thing this is referred to as Going from E to P. Remember, no one succeeds alone.

2)You must earn the right to be passionate for someone else’s goals

Jay had built a foundation with me based upon his credibility as a trainer, his authentic nature and his willingness to share. Jay has become a mentor to me in the area of personal health. Because of this he had the right to leap up on that treadmill and demand more from me.

Had Jay jumped up on the treadmill with someone who was in the class for the first time, they probably would have never returned.

Before you can help drive people towards their goals you must earn the right!

3)You can do anything for 30 seconds

If you have seen the movie We Bought a Zoo you heard Matt Damon playing Benjamin Mee tell his son that “sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.”

I believe that courage isn’t what is needed. Embarrassing bravery isn’t what is needed. All that is really needed is commitment. Commit to something for 30 seconds can attain it. Some things you might need to commit to for longer. For now, start with just 30 seconds!
