As the year comes to an end and next year looms over the horizon, this is a chance for many people to reinvent themselves and improve themselves moving forward. There is always something we wish we could do better and now is the time to figure it out.
Pull out a piece of paper and take a moment to write down the names of your heroes. This list could be filled with:
- parents or other family members
- teachers you have had
- historical figures
- spiritual leaders
- others in your chosen professional field
My list is a short and simple one that includes Jackie Robinson as my childhood hero, John C Maxwell as one in my chosen field and for spiritual leadership and the hero I get to watch each day, my wife.
Now that you have your list take a moment and write out all of the attributes that make these people heroes to you.
- filled with integrity
This list should be an easy one and it should be a long one. Heroes are filled with traits that make them become larger than life to us.
Once you have your list put together take a moment and circle the 12 words on the list that stand out the most to you. No more, no less.
Time to rewrite your list. This time, use only the 12 words that you have circled and put them in order from 1-12 with 1 being the one you are most challenged with and 12 being the one you are strongest in.
Each number now matches with a month in the year. The word that you had circled and are most challenged with (#1) is now the focus for your January, #2 is February and so on and so on. This way you will finish the year next year with the attribute you feel you are the strongest in at this time.
How can you focus on growing in that one attribute for the month?
- Read a book on the topic
- Watch a series of YouTube videos that help
- Reach out to your hero if possible, or someone else strong in that attribute and talk about how they got that way over coffee
By taking a month to focus on one heroic attribute you will look more like your heroes by the end of next year. Capes and tights are optional.
