QR Codes. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

People love to use the “new thing” as much as possible. One of the trends that is still considered new, even though it has been around for a while, are QR codes.

QR stands for Quick Response and click if you want to learn more about the history of QR codes, otherwise stay here and learn how to use them and more importantly how NOT to use them!

Let’s look at this technology out-of-order and start with the BAD. There are many ways to use QR Codes incorrectly and it seems that everyone has those figured out. Some of these misuses are seen in all industries and some can get specific.

1) The first mistake is that people use QR Codes on a screen. We have posted one here to show you what a QR Code looks like. How many of you decided to pick up your phone and scan the screen? If you already have people on your website, in an email or in general on the computer, just give them the link they need!

2)The second place we see people using QR Codes when they shouldn’t is on your Facebook profile image. This is a similar to the first mistake and it is one of the 7 Deadly Sins of Facebook . Your profile image should be of you, not of a bar code that you hope people will want to scan to end up learning about you. Where is the logic in that?

3)Some professions, such as real estate, think that a QR Code is a great capture tool to collect information of potential clients. The problem is there is no information capture to a QR Code. All it will do is send people to your website and you hope that they submit information once they are there. Until a QR Code can capture information it is a gimmick

The UGLY of a QR Code.

Nothing is uglier than when you use a QR Code to send people to your website, and your website is not optimized for mobile devices!

With all of the bad and ugly there are still good uses for QR Codes and here are 3 ways they could be used for good…

1)On a Driver’s License. Imagine having a QR Code on your driver’s license that leads to a website with important information about you such as allergies, emergency contacts and medical history. People almost always carry their driver’s license and if something were to happen to you, this would be a great way for an EMT, a police officer or even nurses to act appropriately.

2)On belongings. Depending on your age and some of your life experiences you might remember your parent writing your name inside every article of clothing you owned. Imagine being able to print a QR Code on all of these items. Lost and found would be a thing of the past as through the QR Code they could learn who an item belong to and even have a way to contact the owner. While you might not want that t-shirt back that badly, maybe you add your QR Code to your pet’s collar or your suitcase. Maybe one day we are even adding these QR Codes directly to our kids.

3)This is the best use we have ever seen for a QR Code. It was etched onto a tombstone. This is a QR Code that will survive for decades and will always be there for future generations to scan the code and be linked to a place like YouTube to view a tribute to the person. The QR Code can be redirected at any time. The videos and photos can always be updated. This creates a history that can always be shared.

QR Codes can be excellent for consumers to gather information. As for the businesses using them, use them properly and don’t plan on them bringing you any more business than you already have!

NO is a Four Letter Word

No No No No No No No No No No. How do you feel now? Are you bleeding from anywhere? Is anything broken? Should we get you to a doctor right away?

No cannot hurt you. It is just a simple word that most of us are trained to say since a young age. Think back, and no is the word you probably heard the most often in your life.

No don’t touch that
No don’t open that
No don’t eat that!

Many of the sentences that our parents and teachers and even friends used started with the word no.

Think about anytime recently that someone asked you something or challenged you on something. Was the first word out of your mouth a no?

It is time to stop looking at no as a negative word and think of it as the four letter word it should be – good

If you never heard the word no you would never challenge yourself to learn more and to grow. Everything would be a yes and life would be simple and you would be comfortable with whatever you had and stop there. A no pushes you and that is good!

If you never heard the word no everyone would be succeeding the same. A no stops some people and allows others to find the next step needed. As we know you are a success already, you want to continue to stand out from others right? When you have heard a no you have used that to find the next yes and that is good and what helps set you apart.

If you have ever heard the word no then you have had to made a decision in your life. A decision to grow or a decision to accept the no and go on a different path. Whichever you have chosen it is good!

A no is a good thing to hear. Make it a goal to get at least 10 no’s in a day. If you can get those 10 no’s the yes that you earn will be worth it!

Do you enjoy the information found in these blogs? (we hope you are not giving us one of our 10 no’s with this question)

4 Things to Make You a Gentleman

Manners are disappearing in our world today. Children learn early to say please and thank you and that is where it seems to end. As we get older our manners seem to get worse and worse.

My dad always said to treat a woman the way you would want your mother treated. Hopefully this is a message that can resonate with you as well.

Men, here are 4 things that will help you be a stand out and make women believe that there are still gentlemen out there. Don’t worry you don’t need to dress like an old school gentleman to show the traits of one.

Ladies, don’t hesitate to share this with the men in your life.

1)The first is one you know, hold doors open.

With the invention of self opening doors at many stores men have gotten lazy with opening doors. Hold a door open for a lady. Open the door to the car, into a store and into anywhere with a door. This is a quick way to remind a woman that you see her as a lady.
clarification: If the door in question is a revolving door, men should go through first so that they can be the ones to get the door spinning with a push.

2)The second one is one that most men don’t even think about. Walk on the outside of your lady.

Whenever you are walking down the street make sure that you are on the side of her that the traffic is also on. This will keep her safe from anything flying up from the road in her direction.
clarification: When walking through a mall, be on the side of her that is not between her and the store. This will allow her the ability to window shop and keep you between her and the sales people at the cart offering just a quick free demonstration she wants to avoid.

3)The third one is one that might not be a part of your regular life. Make sure you have backseat courtesy.

We are not talking about staying on your side of the car, of course we know you already know that one. We are speaking about any time that you are taking a cab or riding with friends and you end up in the backseat. Never have her slide across the seat. As a gentleman you should either put her in the car and go around to the other side, or to be safe with a cab in a busy city, you should get in first and slide all the way over to make things easier on her. Plus have you ever had to slide across a seat in a dress or a skirt, it isn’t easy we have been told.

4)The fourth thing will put you a step ahead.

When on an escalator with a woman make sure you are ready to prevent her fall. That means that if you are going up the escalator you allow the lady to go before you. If you are heading down on an escalator make sure that you are the first to head down. Whether you are heading up or heading down, make sure you to stay the right to allow others to pass.
Of course none of this will matter if you forget the first lesson on manners you were ever taught. Always say please and thank you.

Chadalyst – Men, hold a door open for a lady today. Ladies, forward this to your men!

Do you make these 6 mistakes every morning?

There are 6 common mistakes many of us make almost every morning. Hopefully we can help guide you to a better start to your day by making you aware of these morning missteps.

1) You reach for the snooze button.
The alarm goes off to start your day and the first thing that you do is reach over to hit that snooze button so that you can have just another 10 minutes of sleep. This starts your day off in the wrong way on many different levels.

  • You start later than you planned to get your day going
  • You trigger your mind that you are too tired to get going and you put your mind in the wrong place all day long

Set your alarm for the time you need to get up and if you are that tired in the morning, start going to bed earlier. If you think you get more sleep by hitting snooze, just start setting your alarm for later.

2)You check your email first thing.
Why? Does anyone ever send an email that late in the evening or that early in the morning just to say hello and give you the positive inspiration you need? That only happens if you have subscribed to our blog and wake up to one of our motivational postings. Wait until you get into the office or at least are more awake before you start your mind on the path of solving the world’s problems (or your boss’ or client’s problems)

3)You get on Facebook
Studies show that more than 1 in 4 people check Facebook before getting out of the bed in the morning. Is that you? Why do you do it? For the same reason you shouldn’t check your email, you should wait on Facebook. The postings that your family or friends have made or the big news of the day will still be there when you check later.

4)You turn on the news
When was the last time the news was filled with feel good stories? They work them in only so they have them now and then. The news will start your morning by filling you with fear and anxiety. They want you to remember to always tune in and rely upon them. They make money only when people watch!

5)You forget to make time for you.
Do you enjoy spending a few moments with your kids in the morning? Do you prefer to start your day with a workout? Do you like to find something inspirational to read before jumping into your day?
Then make sure you make this time each day and stop rushing to serve everyone else and remember that an appointment with yourself is as important, and maybe more important, than an appointment with anyone else.
If Facebook is your thing, remember mistake #3. Get everything else done and started on the right foot before you log on.

6)You skip breakfast
You have heard that this is the most important meal of the day since you were a kid. The commercials told us and our parents told us so this must be fact. Starting your day with the nutrition that you need to get through the day makes breakfast key. Stop skipping it as you run out the door. Plan for it. A bowl of cereal, some eggs, even some fruit all can make sure that your day starts in the right direction.

By starting your morning the right way you fuel up your body, your mind and you are better prepared for facing everything the world is going to throw your way through the day.

Chadalyst – Which of these mistakes are you making? Figure what you will do to change this mistake and then watch your days improve.

You are someone’s role model

You are a role model.

This isn’t a job position that you apply for.

There is no application that you had to have filled out.

Someone out there is watching you and learning from you with everything that you are doing.

You might not even know who it is that is paying attention to you. You might not have any idea when they are watching you.

You are always on duty and there is no end to this shift.

  • You might be a mentor to a child in your home watching what you choose as priorities.
  • You might be a mentor to someone at work watching to see what level of achievement you are setting
  • You might be a mentor to a someone who you don’t really know and they watch everything you do online

It could be someone in your neighborhood, someone at a store you stop at frequently or even a pet in your household that learns from your mood and temper. You might never know who it is and it might be more than one person.

How can you set a good example and be the role model you want to be?

  • Do a good deed by holding a door open for someone and maybe it sends a message to someone who sees it happen as well as the person you assisted.
  • Pay for the car behind you at the drive through window and you could impact the server at the window and the people in the car behind you.
  • Give a moment to help feed the homeless and you are setting an example for everyone in your life as well as being a mentor to everyone there to eat.

The question to ask yourself with every action you choose is, what sort of example are you setting for others?

Chadalyst – Stop and take a moment to think of someone who you know you are a mentor to. What message are you sending them? Is it the message you want them to remember?

Four Reasons You Should Be Using Foursquare

We have heard from many that foursquare is a game or that foursquare makes no sense to them. We hope that we can shed some light on how to use foursquare that make sense.

Let’s quickly start with what foursquare is.

According to foursquare they are a “…free app that helps you and your friends make the most of where you are. When you’re out and about, use foursquare to share and save the places you visit…”

An easy way to describe foursquare is an app that allows you to check in wherever you go to share information about locations.

Many people ask, why should they even use it. We are going to share with you the four reasons you should use foursquare. It doesn’t matter what you do for work all of these tips can be applied to help you grow.

1)Use foursquare to become a local expert.
Checking in is great and can earn you points, badges, mayorship and specials. The best thing you can do is take a moment and share a tip about the location where you are checking in.

  • Are you at a restaurant? Leave a tip for the item to avoid on the menu, or the best server that people should ask for.
  • Are you at a park? Leave a tip for the best spot to watch the sunset.
  • Are you at the mall? Leave a tip for the best place to find a parking spot.

Become someone who is filled with helpful information and create personal branding and become the local expert. This will also help you increase your Klout.

2)Time to do something new.
We have all had that feeling of wanting to go someplace new and not knowing where to go. Use foursquare to help solve that challenge. Open foursquare and select “Explore” and find places near by that are for eating, that are offering foursquare specials and other categories.

Of course you will see the tips left by others (see point 1) and then find a new place to explore

3)Grow your own business.
With all of these people checking in and leaving tips you should make sure you take a moment and create and verify your own business. By having your own business on foursquare you are giving others the chance to check in at your location, share tips about you and earn specials. With the changes at foursquare you can now also push out information to your clients with news, deals and other information about your location.

4)Save save and save
The fourth reason to be using foursquare would be to save. Many businesses are offering a deal if you check in.

  • Get a free upgrade on your drink.
  • Get a free appetizer with your order.
  • Get money off your purchase.

How can a simple click on your phone to save money not be worth it?

There are other reasons to use foursquare as well. One of the fun parts is to steal a mayorship (check in most often at a venue) from friends and earn badge. Badges are like boy scout merit badges and you earn them for different activities. Learn more about badges.

Foursquare can’t hurt you and it can help you. Why wouldn’t you add this simple app to your daily routines?

Chadalyst – Start using foursquare and if you are using it, go leave a tip for someone at your favorite place to check in.
